octane booster with tune?

Currently stationed in California where 91 octane is the highest available . I don't plan on being here forever but its going to be a little while. So is it OK to add octane booster to 91 to reach a higher octane level for a 93 tune with edge eco cs? And how much should I add? I know its like $30 for a tune from PHP, but can I do just one tune with a normal edge eco cs?

I would pop the $ 30 for a correct tune. It won't take long to pay that much in octane booster. I have lived with 91 oct tuning forever, no big loss - two octane points.

A can or bottle of octane booster raises the octane in a tank so little that it is almost immearsurable. To go from 91 to 93 with booster would take a half tank of the stuff. If you have a 93 tune, just retard the timing per the manual to run 91. Vice versa if you have a 91 tune and run 93 octane. Just bump the timing.

Personally, I would not recommend doing that. You can always run a higher octane fuel in the truck then the octane tune loaded, but you never want to run a higher octane tune with lower octane fuel when the truck is tuned for a specific octane rating.

But if the timing is retarded from the 93 octane setting now would it detonate considering timing is what causes detonation correct?

If you have an Edge, they tell you in the manual that you can retard the timing. That is what eliminates the pre-detonation. They tell you how many "steps" to reduce it for each one octane. I no longer have the Edge manual, and can't remember how much it is.

I'm waiting to get home from deployment to hook it up so hopefully the manual will elaborate on that. Thank you so much for the input bluejay.

you should be fine running the 91 on a 93 tune....both octanes are derived from the same fuel trim tables...

it would be a different story if you wanted to run 89 on that tune...

personally you should look into getting a custom tune for the 91 octane from PHP....www.gopowerhungry.com

Put your truck year and engine in your profile. It would help to know this info when giving advice.

True, the bottle will say "raises octane 5 points", One point is .1 not 1.0, so, you would need a boat load to do it.
