Does updating firmware on SCT do anything?

There appears to be a firmware update for my SCT Tuner. I currently have it loaded with custom tunes from 5 Star.

Is there any benefit to updating it to the latest firmware?

I do experience pinging/rattling that I have attributed to my VCT Solenoids but I can't see how this would be affected by tuner firmware (although it would be great if it was).

My current version is 1.2.134 and the new version is 1.2.137

Thoughts?

1. Call SCT or yer tuner FIRST to see what the update is supposed to address.

2. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I have ran both. To be honest, I didn't see a big difference between the two. I was chasing the pinging sound and that's what led me to try both companies. I currently have a 5 Star loaded up.

Seems the pinging is a known problem. I have a canned tuned on mine and can't get it to stop pinging

The pining is called Detonation, and can have some pretty drastic long term effects on your truck. That noise is the fuel in the cylinder igniting slightly before it's supposed, creating multiple flame fronts and jarring your piston. It can cause blown gaskets or even crack a rod.

I live in Phoenix, and the heat in the summers cause quite a bit of extra heat and pressure in the cylinder, so detonation is very common, even on stock tunes. You can try to alleviate this by using a higher octane fuel, as 89 and 91 have higher flash points, so the fuel is harder to ignite without a spark.

I'd definitely not drive around with detention problems.

I have determined that my pinging is caused by less than steller VCT solenoids, not detonation.

Oh .. I used to HATE Detention too!

BTW - Google: Detonation, Pinging and .... Preignition ...

Or - just call yer tuner feller to FIX it.

So what's it gonna hurt to run around with the pinging? I just put truck back to stock today until I order some tunes in fears of hurting the motor

Updating the SCT firmware isn't needed since you are running a custom tune anyhow. Should you switch to a preloaded SCT tune or need to reload new custom tunes on the SCT unit, then yes I would suggest updating to the latest firmware. It's pretty easy to do and should you need any help with it, just shoot me a PM, happy to help.

Trust that helps.

If the pinging is detonation/preignition/spark knock, it can blow holes in your pistons and trash the valves.
