Fuel smart module on gearztv

http://www.fuelsmart.info/
Any one saw this show, tried looking this up but not too much on the Internet about it. It's suppose to turn cylinders off if not needed to save gas.

Out of curiousity I emailed them and for my truck it's $360, includes unit and injector kit. Claim I would see a gain of at least 20% but said they have seen higher.
my thing is if is is so true home come you don't hear anything about it. If you google. It other then what's on there site you can't find anything.

Interesting.

They use a lot of techno-speak to impress the knuckledragging slackjawed mouthbreathers. PICS are $10, lol.

LMAO @ "This manual is written for professional electronics technicians only and should be read entirely before starting installation."

If I'm not mistaken this is not to be confused with a full MDS OEM system, where the valvetrain is decoupled to minimize pumping losses for the inactive cylinders.

More importantly - I wonder how this would work on an ETC vehicle - the predal position and actual throttle plate position do not always match; it's a PCM-controlled torque-on-demand-but-only-when-the-PCM-says-so kinda system

Lastly - they lost all credibility when they said this: "change your oil to a high quality synthetic such as Mobil 1" LMAO !!!

X2

That 20% gain comes from lightening your wallet.

Not sure if anybody remembers but the latest case I can think of was when the Dodge Chargers used a system that deactivated two cylinders. It actually mechanically deactivated them. I knew someone with one of those chargers and he said it didn't really improve the mileage because without the two cylinders the car barely had enough power to cruise. Give it a slight incline and the two cylinders would have to fire back up. Overall he considered it the worst idea they ever had.

I asked Bill about doing pretty much the same thing as the little module and he told me that since there was no way to disconnect the piston and/or keep the valves open it wouldn't work. The shut off cylinders would effectively be engine braking when they weren't firing.

Want better mileage? Maintain your vehicle and drive very conservatively...or just get a smaller vehicle.

Here is an older picture of what I ride to a nearby produce store and to nearby fishing holes (I have since modified it a bit). Beats cranking the truck and driving at $.28 per mile (my city rating right now).

One would think that if this was a viable that companies would be adding it as it is because of higher CAFE standards and competition they would want higher MPG's.

These are a lot cheaper and you don't need to be a professional electronics technician to install it.

I could be mistaken here, but I'm pretty sure Sir Shotgunz was only being facetious with that post.

All 05+ 5.7 HEMI cars/trucks use a system called MDS (multi-cylinder displacement system) which shuts down 4 cylinders at cruise.
All 07.5+ 5.3 GM trucks have the same type of system (DOD or AFM) which also shut down 4 cylinders.
Even the new 6.4 (392) HEMI and 6.2 L99 engines have these systems. With some tuning, these systems can be used to produce some pretty solid gains in mileage, on the order of +1-3 MPG depending on driving style.
Problem is, if you replace the mufflers on one of these vehicles, it sounds like a crapped out honda going down the highway in 4 cylinder mode, thus we sell LOTs of tools to people who want to turn these systems off
