What is the difference between the X3 and the SF3? I read the difference on SCT's site so I guess my question should really be. If I buy an SF3 will I be able to get custom tunes put on it without getting it unlocked?

 

One of them has preloaded tunes, the other doesn't. A programmer only becomes 'locked' once it has programmed a vehicle from stock. A new programmer is 'unlocked' ready to go. Yes you can buy a new SF3 and get custom tunes for it. I'm pretty sure the SF3 has preloaded tunes and the X3 does not. BOTH can take custom tunes

The reason I ask is because I can find the SF3 for around $100 less than the X3. Not sure why but that's what I've found.

 

Wait your looking at a used programmer? If it is locked you HAVE to get it unlocked to use it. VMP tuning does it but it costs $180

 

One, any chance the X3 you are looking at has 3 custom tunes included in the price, while the SF3 comes with only the canned tunes in it? That could help to explain the cost difference.... just guessing.

 

not looking at used, it was new. I'll keep that in mind that I can use either programmer to put custom tunes on.

 

How are the tunes normally labeled on the SF3? I just received mine and the tunes are labeled "winter/bad gas" ; and another one with "summer" in the label. Is this normal and are these the preset tunes included in the tuner? I thought I was getting custom tunes from Troyer but the tune names listed are throwing me off.
