Which tuner for stock 5.4???
Which tuner for stock 5.4???
My father just picked up an 06 crew cab with a 5.4. He wants to get a tuner but he knows nothing about the truck. I myself used to have fords but now I have a duramax so I'm no help. The truck is completely stock and will most likely stay that way. I have already done some searches but most of the trucks have aftermarket things done. So my question is, which would be the best tuner for his application? What kind of gains is he going to see. He'd really like to see mpg increase along with power and performance. I do know most tuners don't produce the mpg increase they claim and I know he really isn't going to gain much since it is a gas motor. Any help is appreciated.
PHP, troyer, or VMP. cannot go wrong with any. a lot of guys also like 5 star tuning. i went with troyer and cannot be happier. people say he is the best of the bunch. only problem is your going to wait about 6 months for a tune
Maybe I should have titled it which chip/programmer/tuner. I know having it professionally tuner is going to be the best way to go but if I went with just a canned tune/chip, Which is the best one out of the box? And are these guys that are making custom tunes, are they just using the edge or is there another one they use? What do these guys charge for tuning?
We don't mind helping ya' out, but please do a little research on your own first (including reading some of the 100000000000000000000000000000000000 posts in this forum).

Thanks for those links. Here's the thing. All the searches I have done are for people who upgrade exhaust, headers, intake etc. As of now, the truck is going to stay completely stock and yes I know having someone tune it is ideal. But out of the box what is going to show the most gains (mainly mpg) on a stock stock? See, he used to have a powerstroke, he added a diablo and got great gains with no other upgrades. Now he's got this gasser and is expecting to do the same thing. Yes i know they are 2 different worlds but limited budget, no aftermarket parts, whats the best way to go? Thanks again

Programmers across the board are pretty much the same as far as canned tunes go.....a programmer that can have custom tunes is better and diablo can do that....
Nothing is going to do much for mpg. Edge, Grphon, Diablo or SCT will all help with power and improve the shifting. Even stock, the custom tunes are far superior to canned tunes. My 2005 was stock and I had custom tuns from PHP, the Gryphon and loved them.
Read the sticky thread at the top of the Tuning section. That should help some too.

The Hypertech Max Energy Programmer is great for a stock vehicle. The 2006 F150 5.4
picks up 16 HP & 28 TQ on 87 octane and 25 HP & 40 TQ on premium octane. The gas mileage is usually about 1 mpg gain. It will let you move your top speed limiter up or down. You can adjust shift points and rev limiter. You can firm up the shifts on the automatics. You can recalibrate your speedometer & odometer for larger tires or different gear ratios. The part number for the Max Energy programmer is 42003.
