Chip it?

Hello all!

I have started to look into a chip for my '98 f150 (4.6), im not having much luck. Maybe you guys can help out. Here is what im wanting.

1: Increased throttle responce
2: When I put my foot down, I want it to stay, and shift in the power band.
3: Modest HP and torque gain.
4: Nothing so extreme that i'll have valves coming out of the bonnet (its not a new truck).
5: Rev out faster. It doesnt seem to build RPM very fast at highway speed, nor does it like to shift out of passing gear.

And for what I will not be doing with the truck..

1: Races
2: Hauling
3: Roaching the tires

Hopefully, those are general enough for a "canned tune" as you all say. I'd rater not spend $600-800 on a programmer.

Thanks in advance,
K-80

Get the SCT 3 tuner from 5 Star or VMP. Get a custom program for it and you will be happy. I think the cost is about $380, but well worth it.

An option would be a Diablo Preditor, might find one used.

Get a programmer......either sct,edge,Diablo
and with it get custom tunes.....

I prefer and have used sct and edge and like both of those......

Now if you want a multiposition chip aka flip chip......you can still get them from php and Troyer....but the draw back to them is that any time something needs to be changed you have to send back to get reburned ......

Is there any risk in buying a used tuner? As in do people often forget to restore the truck to stock so I can tune mine? Thanks for the reccomendations on the tuner names

And also, how much of a difference will it make once im driving it? Will it be a small difference like jetting a carb or will it really vamp it up.

Risks of buying a used tuner.......no warranty, could be Vin locked or tune locked, no idea how it was treated.....

Buying a new one ......you get support from who you bought it from and a warranty and its brand spanking new......

You'll definitely feel the "seat of your pants" effect but it doesn't bump up a gasser like what happens with diesels.....

Pretty much. To relate it to what you may be familiar with, it modifies the fuel and timing curves, and changes the transmission programming. Nothing drastic, but it will improve drivability more than anything.

Don't expect a heck of a lot, you are dealing with a relatively low torque engine in a relatively heavy vehicle.

A canned programmer will probably be better. Many of them can display gauges as well as pull basic trouble codes. Just be leary of Edge/Gryphon monochrome programmers for your truck. They had a cable issue that would occasionally fail during programming.

What are some good brands and makes of good canned tunes? I think a custom tune is a bit over my head after looking at some of the makers websites.

If you THINK you may want custom tunes and want an Edge CS, buy it from PHP - because they are the ONLY ones that can custom tune it - and if you buy it from them you get custom tunes for half price - $30 a tune.
