Which is better? MAF lightning
Which is better? MAF lightning
I went to a performance shop a few days ago and they were selling a Cool Air Intake for a 2000 Lightning. Now should i buy that for $205 or the JDM 90mm MAF and the JDM BigMouth air filter? I had my heart set on the 90mm untill I asked a gear head friend of mine and he said cool air with no hesitation. Is he on crack or is that a better product for less? Does anyone know the gague of the cool air tubing (or whatever the term is for the bore hole is)?
Thank you all you have built my truck

Hi Spade,
In our opinion here at Performance, currently the best air intake kit on the market for the 1999 & 2000 Lightning is the Airaid kit. It's the only professional kit we've seen that makes use of the cold air inlet from the fender in the Lightning (the Airaid kit for the non-Lightning F-150 doesn't use the cold air inlet, oddly enough), and adds a solid 18 horsepower. You can pick that up right here thru the F-150 Online Store, or you can call that vendor direct, Lemere Enterprises, at 916-361-2510.
A number of Lightning owners of 1999 & 2000 units have upgraded to the 90mm MAF, and if you want to do that, JDM's part will work just fine. That kind of capacity is not actually needed until you are at higher power levels. The 80mm stock unit has plenty of basic airflow capacity, and we have numerous Lightnings running 475 horsepower and more using the stock 80mm MAF unit. The aftermarket MAF's are a bit less restrictive, due to them having relocated the sampling tube, and that is why many people install them, just for that reason. But in terms of airflow *capacity* needs, the Lightning doesn't actually need a 90mm unit to make 475+ horsepower, though you can certainly use one if you want to.
Scuttlebutt has it (and you know how rumors go, you never know if it's actually true) that the main reason that Ford put that 90mm unit on the 2001 Lightning was because they were having problems with some people burning pistons from the lean conditions that result from installing any aftermarket MAF on the 1999 & 2000 Lightning, or from installing the 90mm 2001 Lightning MAF on either the 1999 or the 2000 Lightning, and not having a custom program done for the powertrain computer to compensate for that lean condition. When they put the 90mm unit on the 2001's from the factory, that basically eliminated anyone changing that part out, so Ford didn't have to worry about the motors being run too lean from that type of parts change anymore. Installing either unit (Pro-M's 80mm MAF or the 2001 Lightning's 90 mm MAF) on a 1999 or 2000 Lightning will immediately cause a lean out the air/fuel ratio by about 2 full points, a tremendous amount, and in order to use that *safely*, you must have a custom program done to compensate and get the A/F's back where they should be, about 11.7:1 @ WOT.
If you do decide to go with the JDM 90mm MAF kit, then make sure you have JDM set you up with the custom program to compensate for that unit, they can do that for you and will be happy to, and that should work well for you.
Best of luck whatever your decide,

i just called Lemere Ent and the lady there said that they dont make an AirRaid system for the L's? Do you know of any other systems that i might look into? I still have JDM on my list but i'd like to get a super chip but ill go with a JDM kit if needed
Airaid does make a unit for the 99-00 L's.
It is availble here in the online store and info can be found at

Hi Spade,
Sorry if it was confusing, I think the lady at Lemere Enterprises (Roger's wife, Janet, a very nice lady indeed) probably just made a simple mistake, most likely she may have thought you meant for a 2001 Lightning, which Airaid does not make a kit yet for.
Airaid does indeed make the kit for the 1999 & 2000 Lightnings, and you can order that right here thru the F-150 Online Store if you like, Lemere Enterprises runs that store, so it will come from them if you order it thru there. I know that sounds kinda funny since you were told by Janet that they didn't have it, but trust me & the others who are responding to let you know that the kit actually is available.
Have fun,

I installed the airaid into my truck yesterday and pulled out a 6.23 0-60 @ 1000ft and 105deg F. I heard that temp can suck the power right out of a car so running the stock 0-60 makes me impacient for the winter when temps are below 100. at 70deg i should run about a 6.1 at least. Maybe a few sand bags will bring that time down some more. Thank you all.... next is the superchip for my bad babby
