Local tuner question

I live in the Hampton area of VA. We have a tuner nearby (Horsepower Solutions) that I stopped into talk with. Basically, for roughly $800, I would get an SCT X3 with 3 Custom tunes (87 Per, 87 Tow and 93 Perf) utilizing their dyno and on site techs.

Is this a good deal? He said bare minimum would be 2 pulls, more than likely 3 to 4, but it would get as much dyno time as it needs to get the tunes right.

They are relatively new (atleast from what I have found, probably wrong).

Anyways, should I shy away or go for it? I know I could get something from our "known" reps that always post here, but that would be without dyno time.

BTW: the truck is an 07KR 4x4 w/ 6.5bed. It has an Airaid JR intake and Magnaflow SI/DO.

Thanks

Andy

I'm not sure how much dyno time costs, but I do know it's the best/most accurate way to get a good custom tune as long as the guy doing it is reputable. I spent about $520 for a PHP gryphon cts with 3 custom tunes. So I'd say your deal is not exceptional, but certainly fair. I'd do it. Good luck!!!!

Hi.

For reference:

http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...=171&parent=90

The Xcal3 itself is ~$399 (do not pay more). If it's mail-order, the 3 custom tunes are included in this price: http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...=226&parent=66.

For a stock N/A truck like yours (those mods are very minimal, and these tuner fellers have transfer functions for that Wasshoobi) this usually suffices, in 99% of the cases.

IMHO - save yer money - go mail-order, with VMP, or Troyer Performance - who are, btw, also in VA.

See siggie.

Troyer's wait for mail order custom tunes is measured in months. However, I do believe that you can make an appointment to go to his shop and have work done. It might be worth it to give him a call - he is probably the best F-150 tuner out there. It would probably cost you a night in a hotel. You would be looking at about a 4 hour drive each way, he's in Covington. I-64 all the way.

that's not bad if you need the dyno sheet to impress yourself...

dyno sheets don't win races or get better fuel mileage

+1 You don't need a dyno tune.

From VMP's site:

6 months of tuning support INCLUDED with CUSTOM hand-held flash tuner purchases (X-Cal2, X-Cal3, Livewire). That means we will:

* Send updated files for bolt-on mods such as intakes or longtubes.
* Have a problem or concern? we will review datalogs and email updated files if necessary.
* Review dynographs, assess performance, and send updated file if necessary.
* Do anything else necessary to make sure you are happy with your custom flash tuner purchase.

http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...parent=66&pg=1

You can order your tuner with custom tunes and have them adjusted if necessary for 6 months no charge.

SCT has free datalogging software available if you would like to use it to send data to Justin to have your tunes further customized and that is included in the original tuning cost! Whata deal!

I got mine in Dec. Took 5 days from pay to recieve. 3 days from order it shipped, took 2 to get here. He's in FL so prob like 3 days shipping to VA. His site says 5-10 days for custom tunes (without shipping) and he beat that with me.
