5 Stars Tunes at the Drags
5 Stars Tunes at the Drags
Went to street night at New England Dragway last night and had a great time. The truck is a 08 cc with 373 ls 5.4 4x4 34000 miles.Truck weighs 5880 on truck scales has mbrp single-s+b intake and a livewire from 5 Star with his custom tunes.Trucks best pass was 15.86 at 86.86 mph with a .150rt.This was with the 93 tune and no adjustments.I went after work so I had around 200lbs of tools in the truck and poor air.65% humidity,1/2 tank of 93 and the driver weighs um 260 ish.I think the next time I can get it down to 15.6s if I strip the truck and go with alot less gas. This was my first time running at the track and it was the best 20bucks I have ever spent.Lots of fun.Short of bolting on a blower, any tips to get the et down a bit?http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/...51115304928020

Tips:
For easy weight reduction remove the spare tire, the tire jack and the trailer tow receiver. This will shave off about 100 lbs. As you noted, keep the gas low but don't let it get below 1/4 tank as you sometimes get fuel starvation that can feel like stalling (because it is) for 1/2 to 1 second if you launch hard. If you really want to shave off every bit you can without taking out seats, etc.... drain the windshield washer fluid. That's about 6-7 lbs of fluid (just shy of a gallon).
If its a 4x4, launch in 4 wheel drive hi and before it hits 2nd gear switch back to 2 wheel drive. With a 4x4 launch you can nail the throttle even with cold tires and zero wheel spin. You want it out of 4x4 quickly though because once the truck is moving its only losing power driving the front wheels. The truck can handle 4x4 drive launches, no problem on a naturally aspirated truck. You can even do it on a supercharged truck but not if its in 400+ RWHP territory because you can eventually toast the transfer case or twist the front drive shaft.
If its not 4 wheel drive, deflate the rear tires a little to give you a little extra dig at launch.

sounds like a good way to kill a tcase but hay it might work
You'd be surprised how often its done (track only --- this is not something that will help longevity). Guys with superchargers have too, though I know FX4Matt did it one too many times and twisted the front drive shaft. The diesel guys... countless have done it but the setup is a little beefer but it can cause problems too. Unfortunately with the diesel you have those hubs looked so you're still spinning extra weight once the transfer case is unlocked. Then again, guys trying to squeeze every last bit at the track will eventually break something,
. If trying for a lower number is what's important rather than just finding out what it does as a daily driver there are trade-offs.

No I didnt datalog,in fact I never even put the monitor on.Launching in 4x would help but not doing it with my work truck.I tried different rpms but anything more than 1000 launch would spin 20' and add a .10th at the end.My first pass of the night was the best one,I suspect because of warm tires from the 50 mile at 75-80 run to the track.

yeah my 98 cummins 5spd with 600hp it would blow the tires loose in a 3rd gear launch, I only sled pulled with it the guy who bought it from me ran a high 12. If your referring to the front differential it's not that hard to steer your going in a straight line in the 1/4. I've been in the diesel world for about 10yrs now those guys don't disengage their xfer case
I'm not disagreeing with you about them disengaging. I'm saying I disengage, because the tires can fight each other a bit . Well, with the wide tires I have they do at least, then again I don't drag the diesel, it's not as much fun as my supercharged F150 and if you get into trouble, they are damn hard to recover.
Cheers!

Cheers!
