Edge evolution or gryphon?

Hello everyone, I am pretty much new here and I don't know a whole lot about this so bare with me.

Right now my truck is completely stock, I usually get around 15-16 MPG normally and 18-19 highway. I use my f150 to pull my mower around to a few places I mow for some spare cash and usually i get around 13 pulling it which is only about 1-2 days a week.

I am looking to get new wheels and tires. I am not for sure yet on the wheels but I'm planning to get 295-70-18 Nitto Trail Grapplers. I will probably be starting a thread in the wheels and tires section about what wheels i should get, after I can finally get my pictures to load.

Okay back to subject, when I get new tires and wheels I really don't want to drop my mileage at all, I'm not looking for anymore power, just mileage. I've been reading a bunch of threads lately and I have read that the Edge doesnt really improve your mileage at all, is that correct? Also where do you get a gryphon? I've searched and searched on the internet and I haven't found hardly anything on gryphon programmers. I've read on some threads that some guys have put 33X12.5 tires and added a gryphon and there mileage has actually went up? Is that possilbe or have i got that completely wrong? I am pretty much looking for a programmer that will either keep my mileage the same or increase it when i add the tires and the wheels.

Please correct me on anything that I have wrong.

Don't hold your breath for better mileage when using a programmer with canned or custom tunes, especially when you throw larger tires into the equation.

When you take off the rose colored glasses and realize that we drive bricks and not a focus. Then you also realize to be happy with the mileage that you're getting.

Routine maintenance and control of your foot will help you get better mileage than a programmer would.

And if you still want a programmer (there are a lot of advantages), I'd check out the links in 88racing's signature.

As he said, however, MPG gains are at best, a crap shoot. You might see gains, you might not. Personally, the other advantages make it worth the $.

Well I'm no expert either, but I just put an Evolution on mine and gained 4 mpg highway. I'm not running huge tires though, and like 88 said it's more about driving style and realizing a truck is a truck.

Gonna beat a dying horse but the guys are right, dont expect huge gains but you might get lucky. With my custom PHP tune and going from 235/70-17 to 265/70-17 I did have a gain in mileage under many conditions. I can get 18 mpg on backroads pretty easy and have gotten 21 with a few short peaks of 22 (and yes, my speedometer is right on by calibrating the odometer). Driving habbits play a huge role, you'd be suprised at how little gas it takes to get down the road. I'd say my vacuum guage gets me better mileage than anything else and it has absolutely no effect on the truck at all. The programmer will probably help out some on the towing though and will lessen the impact of larger tires on mileage.

And like shotgun, for me some of the biggest benefits were improved shifting and power, I just took my improved mileage as a extra little surprise.

Okay so I get now that I will not be able to get any better mileage out of a programmer, but will a gryphon or an edge at least keep it around where it is now if i go from a 275-65 to a 295-70 tire?

Many of the tow style tunes help out highway mileage where the drag and mechanical disadvantage of the larger tires cause higher engine load. IF the programmer will for sure increase/decrease/keep the same mileage is hard to say because some trucks react differently to tuning but it will make driving the truck alot more fun.
