Tune Choices

I've decided to get a SCT X3 or SCT 6600 Multi-Position Chip for my 2002 F150 5.4L 4X4 Crew with Long Tube Headers. I've picked a tuner (VMP) for custom tunes. That's the easy part...

I think I'm over analyzing my tune choices. I need some real world advice on these. I got a feeling the X3 might be a better choice than the 6600 however I see a savings with the 6600 and an extra tune. But I think it would be nice to have a code reader too.

I think I'd get with the X3
Towing 87 milage 87 Perf 89
Or
Towing 87 Milage 87 Milage 89

With the 6600
towing 87 milage 87 milage 89 perf 92
or
towing 87 milage 87 milage 89 perf 89

My main goal is to gain milage, especially towing and daily driving, not to mention the long tube headers will benefit with a tune. I think the side benefit will be some smile factors while driving. I think I'd end up driving with either the 89 milage or 87 milage in most cases. I'd set it and forget it until it comes to towing or when I need to make an octane change. But I think I'd regret not getting a performance tune. Therefore I'm thinking of the 89 performance tune for the X3 because I normally see the 89 for the same or close to price of the 87. I'm thinking 87 milage and 89 performance might be a wash and I'd end up runing the 89 performance and only switch over to 87 economy when I'm traveling or prices become further apart.

In the real world type driving - Which tune do you find yourself using most of the time?

Any reason I should consider a different tow tune other than 87?

The flip chip is a great way to have your truck programmed and the switching of tunes on the fly is a great feature. They are for the enthusiasts who are never going to change anything after the chip is burned. If you decide to change something like tire size and gears it will have to be sent back and get those changes reburned on to it.

Your decision on the mileage tunes is a crap shoot.
Not trying to say they're bad but some get the benefits and others don't. Mileage factors improve greater with training your foot and routine maintenance more than anything else.

The handheld programmer is probably your best bet. It is more user friendly with a whole bunch of more things that can be adjusted over a flip chip.

Depending on your octane grades on where you live I would suggest these tunes.
87 perf.
87 tow.
92 perf.

Hope this helps........?

perf over mileage will gain you mileage with all the tunes i tested, unless you specifically babyfoot the mileage tune while driving...

Very good. It's important to know that the milage tune is really only slightly better with proper foot control than the perf tune. I'm just imagining the free way trips and hitting cruise control. Maybe still not much of a noticible difference there. I do not plan on doing anything else to my truck (tire change/gear). However it still sounds like the X3 is the way to go from the feedback I'm getting.

87 tow, 87 perf, and then the third one.

I'm considering the 89 because it's available for an equal price to the 87, and yes both are E10. Either that or the 92. Gut is telling me it's a Coin flip at this point. I think if I got the 89, that's what I'd run normally. if I get the 92, I'll only see it once in awhile.

Thanks!

get the higher octane tune and that's what you'll get the best mileage and power with...
