Questions about Predator U7153

AutoAnything.com has them for $299 minus 15% off with free shipping, so I'm considering buying one. I have an 03 F150 4.6l. I ordered a JLT ram air kit for it that will be here next week, and I'm also considering a catback exhaust. I want the tuner merely to help in fuel economy and give the truck a little extra pep. I don't tow with it.

Does the Predator have specific tunes for different CAI setups?
If not, will the canned tune make my engine run too lean with the CAI installed?
Are there 87 and/or 89 canned tunes on it, or only a 91 tune?
What are the chances that I'm going to have to tweak the tune to make the truck run smoothly/safely?
Finally, I've ruled out the Edge Evo due to the cable problems, and I don't want a Superchips due to tranny problems those tuners seem to create on all vehicle makes. That leaves me with SCT or Predator on my short list, and since the Predator is so cheap, that's why I'm considering it. Are there any known issues with the Predator causing untoward effects on our trucks?

Superchips does not cause tranny problems, at least not on our trucks. I ran a Superchips 1715 on my 01 Supercrew for over 100K miles and had no problems.

Yep - you were misinformed w.r.t. the Superchips. I had one running on a Y2K truck for a while - zero issues. As have many others. So that tranny issue assertion is BS / heresay.

Predator is fine - ensure it's updated and ask DiabloMike (member / Rep here) for good additional advice on settings, etc.

I repeat - remove that Y-restriction - the pursuit of more 'pep' and economy is pointless unless/until that factory Y restriction is addressed. Otherwise the goal is a non-sequitur. Yes - it really is that bad. The left bank is constrained by an effective 1" hole at that junction. On an otherwise 2.5" system. Close yer mouth, plug yer left nostril and then go fer a 100-yard sprint - how do you feel?

Good luck.

So, am I better off with the Superchips? I can pick one up for $150. I figured the Predator would be a little better, as I could adjust the tune a little if necessary.

MGDfan, I looked into the Y-pipe idea, and I am considering it. I just haven't had time to get to the exhaust shop to have the guy look at the truck. For a catback, I actually found a sweet deal on a full stainless JBA setup, so now I'm thinking about getting that; too many choices.

To be honest you will be better off with a custom tune if you are planning mods. Canned tuners are for stock trucks. Get a SCT XCAL3 with custom tunes from VMP.

The choice is yours.

The SC will not support custom tuning, the Predator will, and will also allow you to modify the tune to your liking if you desire.

Does the Predator have multiple octane tunes with the new update, or do you still have to modify the 91 tune to run 89 or 87? Also, with the CAI, is there a good chance the canned tune will create a lean condition?

If Mike says the Predator can be custom tuned, I'd do that.

Cool deal, let me know if you need anything.

It still has just the premium tune, but go to the WOT spark table and pull 4* and it will work well with 87 octane, while still offering good gains.

Lol MGD that's kind of funny. Is there an easy and cheap way to improve on that restriction?

Hey Mike I ordered a Predator tuner last night, can I make that 91 octane tune a 93 octane tune by adding 2* timing? Will that make it the same as if DiabloSport included a 93 octane tune?
I also have a Stack Racing cold air intake kit, would I benefit from a custom tune with that, or would it be better if I put the factory air intake back on?
I'm also wondering if I can somehow change the overdrive settings so that it doesn't downshift out of overdrive so easily when I'm ascending hills on the highway?

Hi.

It's explained purty well in here: http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi...atalogno=10778

Straightforward and not expensive.

The link shows the 2.5"/3" version intended for use with 3" downstream components (either a full catback kit or discrete parts - intermediate pipe & muffler, etc).

You can use the 2.5"/2.5" version for an OEM stock 2.5" exhaust.

Great thanks MGD, I think I'll just get the 2.5 and have it welded in place of the factory y. Any idea how approximately how much horsepower/torque this would free up? Would it make the exhaust a little louder?
