Question on what dealer said...

I was inquiring about warranty etc. and the dealer brought up tuners...

Said some guy got one and in 3000 miles "fried his motor"...

While I realize if you played with the presets your self you could probably screw some stuff up but is this realistic or was he in dealer mode trying to scare away people from messing with the trucks.

I just bought a 2010 and was planning on putting duals / tuner / intake on it but just wanted to ask around...thanks

there sure are a lot of people with them and have had them for long periods of time with no problems.. I think it has to do with how you are using your truck with the tune or maybe not having the proper set up. Im not sure, but dealers most of the time tell you everything voids the warranty.....you use the wrong kind of soap on your truck bumper to bumper is void!!!

The way I look at dealers and their acceptance of programmers is that they'll most likely point their finger at it being the cause of the problem because they cannot accept something they don't understand.

They have a long history if telling dramatic stories that they make up as they go along, with the intent of persuading your decision.

The model is dependent on what you want (gauges? touchscreen?).

No the Gryphon CS/CTS is not available for the 09-10 yet (and no, it's not PHP's fault).

The SCT XCAL3 (supposedly) supports the 09-10. VMP, PHP, and 5Star Tuning all offer the XCAL3 with custom tunes.

I promise you might, possibly, maybe, gain 1-2 MPG. I also promise you won't get any MPG gain (maybe). Each truck and driver is different. Do not rely on the lie-o-meter.

Sure, if you go stupid with a programmer or the guy doing your tuning does, you can do some damage. No different than any other component of the vehicle. Go nuts with it and you will break it. I have 103,000 miles and 72,000 of them are with a tuner. Would not drive it without one.

Here is the info on the 2009 from PHP.

I think your dealer is telling the truth. It may well have happened. I do not know his motives but I will have to assume that they were out of genuine concern for the welfare of your vehicle. So out of the countless thousands of tuned vehicles out there, one, that he knows of, fried the engine. Based on that he recommends not to. Christoper Columbus faced a similar delima.

If you are seeking advice on whether to enhance the performance of your vehicle with a tune then you will most likely get a positive response from this section. First find, at the very least a competent, tuner. A great tuner would be better. Next discuss what you want and purchase a package that suits your needs. FWIW All my vehicles have tunes.

The warranty policy is quite clear - if it is determined that a failure was caused by an aftermarket modification, it's not covered. However, dealers interpret this in widely varying ways.

I'd be willing to bet that if you blow a hole in a piston or swallow a valve and you have a tuner, a warranty claim will be instantly denied.
