Newbie with tuners

I've read a bunch of different posts on here, but it all looks like jibberish to me....
I've got a 99 F150, 5.4.
What would be the best tuner for not spending tons of money. Where is a good place to get one? I'm wanting to get as much power out of my motor as I can, gas mileage is really not an issue because its mainly an offroad truck.
I would like to avoid having to run high octance gas too, but if it makes that much of a difference i will consider it.

Please respond in dummy terms.

The tuner you choose depends on the features you're looking for and how much you want to spend.

Take a gander at the sites I posted, compare features, read the stickies at the top and then ask your questions.

I just ordered a gryphon and it should be shipping out tomorrow.
Sorry there is no easy answer. It really all depends on what you what out of a tuner. If you will be happy with "canned" tunes you can go with Edge Evo or some of the other ones. If you want something that can be custom tuned You can go with Gryphon tuneed by PHP or there are others tuned by other tuners out there.

To help you out. The reason why I went with PHP and Gryphon CS is I have done a lot of research here and other forums. Bill at PHP helped write some of the original software for Edge. He has been tunning Fords for years. I like being able to take advantage of custom tunes. Yes they are expensive $30-$60 per tune. But I've heard they are well worth it even if your truck is completely stock. and when PHP says custom Tune. They mean Custom tune for your truck and your truck only. Other tuners may not customize the tune for your vehicle. Bill at PHP can write custom tunes for your upgrades and driving style. I ordered a custom 87 performance tune. I like to use 87. I may try the 93 preformance (canned) tune for a while just to see what she does.

If you want a good tuner, expect to shell out some bucks. New you'll be looking $400+. Don't forget you can look at the clasifieds here and other forums as well as craigslist for your locka area. Some of the used ones sell a little cheaper. If you see one, be ready to use paypal. On this forum when tuners are in the classifieds they generally go pretty fast and sometimes less than a day.

PHP also has forums and there is a ton of infor ont heir website.

Hope this helps... Good luck
