SCT x3 Tuner

I just wanted to say I ordered a Brenspeed sct x3 with custom tunes. It took about a week to 10 days to get it.It was $379 complete with 3 seperate custom tunes for 87 , 89, and 92 octane.
I think it is a good price, and customer service was very good.
I am very satisfied with the performance of my completely otherwise stock 5.4 Screw with the sct x3.
I have read alot of info on here about the Troyer tunes, and Gryphons, and some of the others, but I just could not afford them,(they are like 5 or 600 bucks arent they?) nor did I want to wait for it, and I really am not that knowledgable to get involved with individual tuning.
So for what it is worth, I am satisfied with the Brenspeed.

So I guess that is a good price ? I get about 2 mpg better...have you used the 92 octane tune yet?

Octane

I have 3 different tunes for the different octane ratings.I was told that using the higher octane would IMPROVE mpg's.
I will try it to find out.I thought that was a dispelled myth, maybe not with custom tunes.

92-93 octane

I had to call Brenspeed about my tune. They have it programmed for 93 octane, but for some reason I can only find 92 common around here. So they are emailing me a new 92 tune .Great service.10 minutes and its on its way.I will be the first to complain, so I think I should also be the first to compliment, so thanks to Brenspeed over there.
Still working on what kind of mpg increase with higher octane.

Mileage

MPG's appear to be a solid 1 mpg better using 92 octane over 87 octane with tuner custom tunes.I think I will go down to the 89 octane tune and leave it at that. Performance is slightly better with 92 octane, but I think a milder tune is good for me all around.

Been running 89 octane tune for several months. MPG is up 1 mpg, and the performance is very pleasing....I went down to 89 from 92, because I didn't want to ''abuse'' my truck with tire squeeling and other hot rodding that would get me into trouble....so in my opinion, a tuner is a must have .

I read about the lengthy wait for some of the tuners....I have a bone stock truck mechanically, and for me to wait on tunes didn't make a whole lot of sense.I figured I wont ever change tire size, install a blower(hehe) or even an air raid, or dual exhaust, so , for me....instant gratification was priority.

I'm thinking about getting one of these myself. Putting on long tubes and figure I should have custom tunes to go with. Seems like a good deal price wise. I'm not sure what octane to order. I'm getting 3 tunes, 1 for performance, 1 for economy, 1 for towing. I'm thinking about using 89 mid grade gas. I often see it for the same price as regular 87 stuff. Or maybe I should do 92 for my performance, 89 for my economy and ? for towing. (thinking 87 for towing since I'll be traveling and not sure how 89 gas would vary accross the nation).

Anything with these that are somewhat disappointing compared to the fancy flashier expensive programmers?

^ Absolutely not, IF you choose the right tuning shop (hint: the ones recommended most on this forum). The quality of the custom tuning is the overriding thing here.

If you simply must have PID displays, you can always just add a Scangauge, or add discrete physical gauges for the critical few items of info - e.g. tranny fluid temps.

I have several PERF tunes (both low and high octane), and one 87 TOW tune - my reasoning for that is the same as yours ( although if you really needed to you could always flash back to the stock tune which is tow-safe - yuk )

When you see 89 for the same price as 87, it's quite often a false economy - the 87 could be pure gas and the 89 is E-10. However, if this is at Casey's, it's the same gas in both pumps - 89 E-10. When Casey's 87 is more expensive than the 89, then it's pure gas.

I am not real impressed with the hype about the custom tunes. I think all of them are probably good. From what I gleaned from talking to these tuner people,(the ones I actually did get to speak with) there are parameters that they go by, and basically a formula with some slight variation. I was looking for throttle response and fuel mileage. I got both at the best price I could find at the time, and what sealed the deal was that when I called Brenspeed, I was talking to an actual person in seconds.
I called every company on here, you should do the same to decide who to spend your dollars with.
I also did NOT want any extra electronics/gauges on the dash.Just another potential thief magnet.
But the bottom line is what works for me may not be what works for you, but I do think supporting tuners who advertise on here is good if they have a product you like.I did.
