Used SCT X3 advice

I am looking into getting my first tuner (yeah!) and found a guy selling his used X3 online. He sent pics and its in great shape. He says

THE DEVICE IS LOCKED.
THE DEVICE HAS 5 UNLOCKS REMAINING.
THE TUNE ON IT CURRENTLY IS FOR THE FORD F-150 THAT I NO LONGER OWN.

As I understand it, if it has 5 unlocks left, I should be able to use an "unlock" so I can use it on my F150, right? And I could do so through the PC software I can download.

I was planning on contacting troyer or vmp for canned and custom tunes.

Advice?

PS- new guy needs help
PPS- I know, I know, I should get a new one w/ custom tunes, but I'm broke and he is selling it for half of what a new one costs

Hello & welcome!

Unfortunately you must send it in to unlocked - there is a fee and it is substantial.

This link explains it fully:

As far as I know - with an X3 you cannot use the Updater Utility to unlock the device. ( or Liveload - which is for X2's)

Do NOT pay a lot for this device in this condition! Once you add up the costs: Half of $400 = $200 + $100+ to unlock, + $180-$225 for three custom tunes = way more than NEW. It will be cheaper to just order a brand-new unit with custom tunes preloaded and a Waranty. Tell him you'll give him $50-$75, no more UNLESS he can get it Unlocked himself. Otherwise - just Pass.

Good luck sir!

Cheers

What probably happened is the truck still has one of the canned tunes in it that he sold and his stock tune for the truck is on the X-Cal and wont unlock until you return the truck back to stock. But regardless its going to cost some major coin to fix it as MGD said.

Yeah, the guys kinda an idiot. I emailed him and he tried to tell me that its only $50 to get it unlocked. I told him to just add that onto the price of it and I'd do it. It would come to about $225 if he bites on it

Hi.

Here's a link to the going rate for an unlock: http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...d=178&parent=2

And - here's a link showing what these are worth on a buyback: http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...parent=94&pg=1

IMHO - even $225 is still too much. Tunes are not free. Heck - you don't even know if it actually works .

Make sure the manual and cable are included.

Good luck!
