New to programmers

Good afternoon,

Like others on here I have been researching various programmers and also canned vs custom. I have a 2006 F150 SuperCab 4x4 with the 5.4L flex fuel engine and 3.55 Limited Slip rear end. The only change from stock is I recently put on 285/70/17 BFG All-Terrain tires. Power seems the same but gas mileage has gone from 14-15 city / 17 hwy to 12mpg. I am looking at the EDGE and the SCT. Should I buy just the programmer or would there be an advantage to going with the Gryphon upgrade or the VMP upgraded SCT?
Thanks

Hello & Welcome!

If you are certain that you will not be modding any in the future a canned device will work fine - However, it just will not produce the same results, nor offer the shifting sophistication of a true custom tune.

All of them will correct for yer tire diameter change.

Do not expect mileage miracles it does not happen.

If you want/need guages in an all-in-one unit the Edge is fine - and offers an upgrade path to Gryphon for a reasonable cost.

A Scanguage II provides nice guage/trip/mpg functionality in a small package if you wished (as a complement to SCT tuners)

Bottom line - Canned tuners are within the cost range of true custom devices - so for me it was a no-brainer - custom.

I hope this helps. Please read the stickies at the top of this forum.

Cheers & Bests!

Bigger tires than stock can equal lower mpgs.
The other thing effecting mpgs could be winter blend fuel.
A simple way to try to get some mpgs back is routine maintenanc like cleaning the throttle body and MAF and changing the fuel filter.
I'm not trying to tell you not to get a programmer but there is those simple things that I mentioned that a lot of people overlook.
Programmers can help with mpgs but only 1-2 mpgs.
They aren't miracles in a box. We drive bricks and not a focus.
