edge problem or truck problem?
edge problem or truck problem?
so, i've been running my edge on the level two program all the time, originally it yielded better mpg and power with my larger tires. however, recently my fuel mileage has dropped to around 12mpg on the highway. also, while driving in the snow and ice two weeks ago for some reason my truck went into engine failsafe mode and cut out on me. so i reset my programmer back to the stock mode and took it out in order to have my truck looked at by the dealership, which was a whole other nightmare all together.
since i unplugged my programmer, my fuel mileage has jumped back up to between 16 and 17 on the highway and that is with 33" tires.
i guess my question is has anyone had this problem before. is it my programmer or my truck? i've been thinking of sending my edge off to php to get reprogrammed anyway so i guess now might be the best time.

What code did it throw when it went into fail-safe? I have had a similar problem for the last couple months and still have not found a definite solution yet. I can drive in stock no problem but not with any level on the Edge. The code that my truck threw was P061F. What happened at the dealer? I was told by Edge, everyone on here and the PHP forum to take it to a dealer to see if it was something with my PCM. Edge told me that there was a TSB out that would solve my problem at the dealer by updating my PCM, but when I called the dealer, they had no clue about anything that I was telling them. The dealer told me to leave the truck there so they could figure it out, but I need it everyday for work.
my 08 V6 went into limp mode last winter. it was in the teens temp-wise. did it once, hasnt done it since. it is bone stock except K&N CAI. never had it checked out. but it never actually stalled on me. i drove home, shut it off and got a flashlight(dark outside). came back out and looked under for fluid leaks(didnt know what the light was for at the time, thought it was for engine problem) started it up and it was fine. drove it around the block and still nothing. so i read my manual and figured if it did it again i would call the dealer. it only had around 5k on the clock at the time. but there was also ice and snow on the road at the time. never had it checked for a code tho.
Try unplugging the battery for 10-15 minutes. My mileage shot up to 18 from 15 on winter blend. I am beating my summer mileage right now. Truck shifts and runs awesome since having to unplug the battery.
yeah, unhooking it for 10-15 minutes resets the computer. you will automatically go back to the original MPG setting. then it will fluctuate based on how you drive. it monitors the last 500 or 1000 miles driven and compensates gradually for how much gas is being used. i.e. my neighbor bought an 02 4.2L auto 2wd and was getting 13mpg when he got it. his friend worked for ford and told him to unhook his battery for at least 10 minutes to reset the computer. so he did and he instantly got 17. then by driving easy, it gradually went up to 19 and stayed there. his was probably used for hauling or the guy that owned it before him floored it a lot. so it was horrible mileage. if he didnt reset the computer, the way he drove would have gradually made it better but it would have taken a lot longer to get there.
If you guys like to kill the KAM go right ahead.
But........
Unplug the programmer incase you short something out while your in the process of doing this. This also includes jump starts and battery changes.
A short can have the possibility of really screwing up a programmer like the edge, gryphon, livewire, or trinity. Just thought I'd pass the info along. Thank you and have a beautiful day!!!!!!!

sorry! forgot you have a tuner. make sure you load the stock tune back on before unhooking the battery. if you have your tune loaded and reset the computer, you might lose your tune setting. dont know for sure but better to be safe. also i just thought of the fact that maybe, if you live on the northern part of the US, the winter mix gas may not be totally compatable with the tunes. the winter mix gas has additives and the tuner might not adapt well to them. dont know for sure, just throwing that idea out there. i dont know much about tuners and what effects the programming.

No, you will not lose your tune. It works no differently than it would if you had the stock tune loaded. What 88 was referring to I think, if you connect the battery back up and have a short in the system, there is the possibility of a jolt hitting the monitor or even the PCM. If everything is alright with your electrical system, it will not have an effect on anything.

I'm not trying to scare anyone but the possiblity does exist. That's why I posted what I did.
Cause I don't like seeing people starting threads with "HELP my truck won't start" or "My pcm got messed up!".
Just because they shorted something out while doing maintenance.
I'm just pointing out PREVENATIVE maintenance proceedure that could save people some grief!
Thank you for listening and have a wonderful day!

Not sure what winter mix is exactly. Here in Texas, we now have 10% ethanol all the time and the only affect it has is a loss of mpg. The tune handles it just fine. I run the 87 Pref most of the time.

i really have no clue what is added, just stuff for easier starting in cold weather and such but if your tuner can handle the 10% ethenol mix, the it should be abel to adapt to the winter mix. pretty sure it is still 87 octane. we dont have the ethenol mix here. is that E85/flexfuel? or is E85 even more ethenol than that?

ok, i thought it was 85 octane or 85%gasoline. i cant run it anyway. my truck isnt E85 capable.
