Question about using XCal2 with no tunes
Hey guys, Ive spent a lot of time looking around for help on this topic and havent found anything totally relevant to my situtation yet.
I have an XCal2 that I bought to use with my Ford Focus, I havent got any tunes for it yet, but seeing as how it works with the truck as well, I wanted to mess with it a bit but wasnt planning on getting a tune. Is there no way to adjust tire size and idle, anything?
I live in Canada, and not sure about getting tunes from around here with my weather conditions. Its bone stock atm anyways other then the Toyo Open Country 265/75R16s

All you can do without tunes is:
Read / Clear DTC codes on any OBDII Ford
Clear CEL
Datalog the vehicle using LiveLink; either passthrough or on the handheld
Run live guages for any PID/DMR via an onboard laptop, using above s/w
Read yer PCM's strategy code
Will need tunes to do any changes such a you describe...sorry.
Tunes can be ordered and loaded via the web - all you need is to supply the strategy, the device s/n and answer a bunch of questions. Oh yeah, and pay up.
Still worth it for the shifting alone, the power is a bonus.

Ok. Well to be honest, I would want better mpg over a few extra hp. I have read that most of the tunes to provide a 1-2mpg increase in gas mileage but... For instance, I was going to put a K&N in it like my other vehicles, but was worried gas consumption would decrease due to more air flow, more power... etc. And then I would probably just built a cold air intake for it... but again, dont want to loose mpg. lol
The other problem is finding a tune made for my climate. I have seen a lot in the states but... none from guys in Canada. Im sure I havent looked hard enough...

the reason you lose mileage is due to harder acceleration...
if you do everything you can to help your vehicle breathe properly (better than stock) you can yield great results...
my green truck (when driven acordingly and on flat roads in west texas eastern new mexico) yielded around 29mpg's now if I stomp it all the time and pass cars like thier sitting still then obviosly I use more fuel...

I see the troyer tunes are popular, but again they are in the states, and I read about people waiting weeks apon months to get a tune from them... I dont like the sound of that. Thats why I hate dealing over the net.

wow... 29mpg. Im getting like 15-17mpg. Well maybe then I will grab a K&N and make it into a cold air intake or just leave it. I read about taking out the 2" restrictor but I had it apart and didnt notice an obvious piece to remove.... no point leaving the filter wide open under the hood really.... during winter might not be so bad but...

If you get a CAI, also do not expect miracles, either mileage or power.
What Tarajerame was referring to was a cafeful, well-planned, comprehensive breathing upgrade, end-end. Apples-to-oranges. He also forgot to tell you - that was downhill with a tailwind, drafting an 18-wheeler, in neutral, with the engine off, tires @ 80 psi, and he was wearing a skinsuit. And the gallon unit measure was 4.54 L, not 3.8 L

I live in Canuckistan too. I run Troyer tunes without issue. Climate is NOT a factor, but vehicle maintenance sure is. Letting them know when ordering where you live, ethanol percentage, along with a lot more info as detailed on the tuning sheets they send you, will ensure yer tune s pretty much spot-on.
As for the wait - well, popularity + quality + small bidness + 1 guy doing the tuning = a queue.
At the moment, TP and PHP are busy. VMP does offer Expedited mail-order tunes. Just a couple/few days. Call them. Heck, call ALL three of them. Talk to the tuner feller himself if at all possible - yer in fer a treat regardless.
You should be happy that this stuff is now done via the Net - it sure is more convenient.
BTW - You can always drive to TP's shop (they are putting together a Dyno Day - see that thread). You get yer flash device, yer tunes, tweaked on their dyno the same day. No waiting, but it is a road trip.

actually I was neked

the truck has 3.55 gears, I was running the stock wheels, mileage tune, UD pulleys, no fan, gotts intake mod and K&N filter
cruise was set at 55mph and it was on 2 lane roads in west Texas and eastern New Mexico
lol... well first of all, Im not expecting a hot rod after putting a K&N in it and what not, Im not new to the automotive industry, but its my first f150, had a 82 F100 Stepside and my father has an 89 F150 Lariat.
other then that Ive only messed with my cars and my motorcycles. I got a bike, thus why Im not looking for power and speed out of a bloody truck. But improved gas mileage would be better... and would be the only reason I would get a tune. I dont see a problem with my tranny shifting the way it does really... but I havent been in a tuned truck with the shifting "improved".
Where is this Dyno Day? PHP was another company I read about people having to wait... and wait... with no replies. So I dunno, I will try and call around when I get a chance.

Give 'em a call then, and talk to Mike. Make sure you are sitting down, have plenty of fluids to keep hydrated, and have gone to the bathroom first. Trust me

Ok thanks for the info. Ive looked on the troyer site and cant seem to find pricing on tunes alone, just the programmers with tunes. But I read somewhere they were roughly 60$ a tune?
Canada sucks for tuning anything lol. I have a ford focus with every aftermarket part available practically apart from some form of forced induction (yet). And it was hell getting parts without going to the states.
