Gryphon Towing Question

Currently running my Gryphon on level 3. Tomorrow (Happy New Year ) I am going to be towing my four wheeler on a small single axle trailer. According to the manual, it is not recommend to tow on level 3, I can easily switch to level 2 but I remember Bluejay saying something about level 2 (canned) is recommend for 5-7K+ (if I remember correctly). My fourwheeler plus trailer is probably less the 900 to 1000 lbs. With such a light payload is it necessary to go back to level 1 or 2?

No, you will be fine with that weight, I believe Bill over at PHP has posted that the perf. tune is ok up to around 2000lbs without hurting.

I usually tow somewhere between 1,500 and 36,000lbs with my f150 on level 3.

Wow!

Towed the light weight over the weekend on level 3 and it was not enough to know it was there, needless to say all went well. Thanks for the input guys.

You will probably be fine with that weight. The main problem is in the stress on the transmission. Though it is not totally necessary, and considering how easy it is, I would change to Level 2 and bump the timing for the premium gas. That way I know I am safe. That is just the way I think. It is so easy to change the tune.

Thanks I will take that into consideration when hooking to a larger load. As far as advancing the timing, is that a trial and error to get it where it needs to be or can someone throw a value out there for me, running 93.

You adjust timing .5 for each octane. So running 93 octane on an 87 tune, you could safely bump the timing +3.0. I say safely because the canned tunes still leave a little on the table. You can actually bump it a tad more, but the +3.0 will take advantage of the 93 and give you the low end torque of the towing tune provides at the same time.

so is it safe to assume that a custom 87 octane tune can be converted into a custom 93 tune by adjusting the timing?

No, there are other differences within the tunes. It's just that if you are on an 87 tune and run higher octane, you can get some of the advantage by bumping the timing.

OP - the old guy is right on here. Caution is a good thing.

Additionally, elevated EGT's can be a concern towing on a perf tune.
