Different Tune Questions
Different Tune Questions
Well I am getting ready to put some #94106 Hi-flows on my FX4 and then am going to buy a tune 'cause its the 4.6. Havent decided on which company yet (PHP or VMP). I like that the Gryphon has a digital display but the XCal is a little cheaper. I have two questions...1) If you are going to pay $400+ for a custom tune why would you still have them put a "canned" or stock tune for one of your custom calibration tunes? and 2) Why would you need the different octane rating tunes on a naturally aspirated vehicle? I dont think it would make much of a difference unless you had forced induction. 3) Which company would you guys recommend?
Thanks in advance

I'm not biased toward either one, but I recently chose to go with a Gryphon. Not new, though. I'm upgrading my Edge to the custom Gryphon. I'll do my best to give you some answers.
1) For PHP, the stock tune is included in case you ever run into any technical problems or take it in the dealer. Some dealers will void warranty work because of programmers. In the case something is wrong with your truck (as an example, shuddering), you can program it back to stock to see if it's your truck or the tunes causing the problem.
2) The octane won't make that much difference if you aren't tuned. Your truck comes from the factory to run best on 87 octane. Once you get tuned, though, you can take advantage of the higher octane.
3) As I said I'm not biased but went with PHP because I already had the Edge. With a CAI and new custom exhaust setup I wanted custom tunes to prevent any problems.
Someone else chime in if I'm wrong.
If you are changing to high flow cats, you will need custom tunes. The canned tunes are for stock intakes and no cat or header mods.
I have an 87 Performance and a 93 Performance. There is definitely a difference. The 87 tune is all I need for general use. If I ever want to feel a little more, I run the 93.

I went with VMP 87 performance tune for my 06 and I'm very happy with my tune. The great thing of having a SCT X3 I can also by a PHP or Troyer tune. I think if you use 91 oct you could bump up the timing, I think I rember reading a post. Well any ways you will love a custom tune compared to stock.

That is exactly what my choices would be, given your mods.

oem manifolds with high flow cats=no
I thought the tune writers had said if we remove cats or go to high flow, we would need to be tuned for it. Maybe I misunderstood.

removing-yes, as the rear o2's would need turned off to keep cel off, replacing cats with high flows does not increase the velocity pressure of the exhaust gases enough to merit tuning, now the vp would be changed substantially on long tubes...
