97 Expy 5.4l

I volunteer with my local FD, and sometimes I tow one of our 16' trailers. My 5.4 does OK, but the mileage sucks on a fully loaded trailer with 4 people in my rig and my gear in the back...I notice I run in a higher gear longer, etc.

Can a chip/tuner help with the mileage and shift issues?

FYI, I don't know ANYTHING about chips/tuners.

Thanks!

Yes on the transmission shifting issues, and most will say yes on the mileage, however I have not seen much increase from my VMP tuned XCal3. That's more than likely my foot staying buried in the floor board though.

I suggest custom tuning with whatever you get and who does the custom tuning.

XCal3 with either Justin at www.VMPTuning.com or Mike Troyer at www.troyerperformance.com are the two main tuners on this board. You get 3 tunes of your choice, ex: 87 mileage, performance, tow, 89 mileage, tow, performance, etc... All for $400

or

You can get a Gryphon from www.powerhungryperformance.com I believe that's the website. I don't have any experience with the Gryphon, so I can't really comment on it. Maybe someone else will chime in...

Hope that helps... Oh and Welcome!

I think you mean lower gear (higher rpms) longer?

if you are towing a lot you need a shift kit and a gear swap asap...

do you have a cold air intake? if not try the "gotts intake" - it's very budget and performance friendly

a tuner can help you with towing (just remember you have a gasoline engine not a diesel) however to get the maximum gains you'll need to run premium octane with a custom / canned tune for premium fuel.
