Buying used Edge ?

I have a 4.6L 2008 XLT with a Magnaflow SI/DO exhaust setup. Everything else performance wise is stock.

I was just about to pull the trigger on a new gryphon until I ran cross several used Edges.

My initial questions:

Will I be happy with the canned tunes that the Edge offers with my 4.6?

What would be the benefits or converting it to a Gryphon for the $25 fee?

Do I need a custom tune with my exhaust setup the way it is?

Would you pay $275-$300 for a used Edge or just get a new Gryphon?

You are the only one that knows if you will be happy or not. I have had the Edge, ran the canned tunes for 35,000 miles or so, and then converted to the custom tunes of the Gryphon. You will get better power, economy from the custom tunes but the huge difference in mine was the shifting and downshifting. It was money well spent for me, and I would not hesitate to do it again should I need to. The canned tunes and the Edge are good, but the Gryphon is great.

As for the exhaust, no, it requires no extra tuning.

I was considering doing the Gryphon tune, but recently my edge evolution screen went black. So, I had to send it in and have the screen replaced. I'm glad I didn't do the Gryphon tune, I'm pretty sure it would have voided the warranty.

Would it be wise to get the used Edge for $275 and then send it in to PHP? What exactly does PHP to upgrade the unit? Am I better off just purchasing the new Gryphon?

The extra $$ would be worth the new device from Bill.

I don't have one yet, probably will in the Spring but if I had a choice between new and used it wouldn't be hard.

What they do is a question you really need to ask them, either in an email or by phone, but it was my undrstanding that they just put a new case on your unit, return it to you, and then write whatever custom tunes you want. Call them, they have great customer service and really want to help.

For me, the few dollars I would save would not be worth it. I would be happier with a new, fresh piece of hardware and knowing I was dealing with someone that stands behind what they sell. There have even been instances of guys buying used Edges and the previous owner had not returned it to stock before selling it. It's worthless that way until PHP or Edge can reprogram it.

One other thought. If I were buying a used one from a friend or even just locally, it might make a difference, but if I am buying one sight unseen and not knowing if it was returned to stock, I would prefer a new one.

It is one from a member on here that says he has taken great care of his truck and the tuner as well. He is selling his truck and has returned it to stock tune.

Most likely, it's a safe buy, then. You will just have to make a decision and go with it. You probably can't go wrong either way.

If you have a completely stock truck and don't plan on doing any mods, then it's a good deal. Please know, though, that the warranty is non-transferrable -- that's for Edge AND PHP. Just something to think about.
