just came across one today. reading through it. i have a 2008 f150. 5.4 triton. 8 inch lift with 37's.. have not re-geared yet. i don't want to lose much mpg if not any. what are you guys thinking i should do here? i know i can reset my gage which i am going to do. but what should i do for tuning?

the first thing you should do is probably re-gear. that will give you the most benefits.

next would be custom tuning. everyone here is probably gonna suggest vmp, troyer, or php. give all of them a call and get a feel for each of them. here's the web sites(in no particular order):

Bill @ PHP

Mike @ troyer

Justin @ VMP

the other thing to keep in mind is do you want just a tuner or a tuner with gauges as well. the x-cal is just a tuner, whereas the livewire and gryphon/edge can also monitor certain parameters such as mpg, engine coolant temp, % load(the ammount of power you are using divided by the max ammount you have), etc. if you like neat little gadgets you can show off to your friends, you might like having the gauges. also do a search on this site to hear what peope think about each.

Just load the pre loaded tune and change the tire size.

Hmm.. I don't think you have to worry about losing much MPG's since you're probably already around 11 mpg anyway!

Are you trying to say that 4.88s are going to decrease his mileage?

I was making a small joke about his truck configuration... 5.4 - 8inch lift - 37's with 4.88 gears.... I thought that it was funny that a person that rigs their truck up like that would be concerned with fuel mileage.

What do you think Thumper? 4.88's decrease or increase fuel mileage? And if you say Increase- please explain your reasoning.

regearing will bring the overall ratio back to stock and the stock mileage. His tires are way larger than stock and makes his current set up like a 2.00:1 where the 4.88's will bring him back close to 3.73.

even with stock tires 4.10 gears help performance and increase city mileage when driven accordingly.

chester, here's something you'd be proud of:

I didn't see much mileage increase, about .5 mpg but it was still an increase. Explain my reasoning? I would but tarajerame already did it for me.

I have 38's and I got 11.6mpg last tank....normal driving.

I got 12.6mpg with my 35's.

4:88 gears with both tires.

I think your mileage will go up some.

sorry bout that, it's just a dirty air filter for chesters viewing pleasure, I know its not near as dirty as the one he posted a while back but close...

my dad is running 31 inch tires on his 3.00 geared truck (but he's got the inline 6, 223 cu in) I've got the same truck with 4.56 gears same tires (292 V-8 w/ 4 barrel) and I can out run him, out pull him and get better mileage than he does and he cannot understand why...

the lower gears equal things out
