As with a good "performance" tune, tow tunes get more power and better transmission characteristics than stock. The tow tune is usually a tad richer than max performance, shifts a little softer and max rpm a little lower. I tow in the 6-8k range at least once a week and my 93 tow is the tune I run all the time. Love then partial throttle response and low end power. Having said that I also tow with various diesel trucks from work and can't imagine coming from a 7.3 to a 5.4. 6k plus isn't so much for the F150 suspension or brakes or even getting up to speed but if you highway tow very far you'll miss the diesels ability to lug along at 65-70 mph in OD and not break a sweat.

It doesn't hurt a stock truck to tow. Mine has over 1/4 million miles on it, and I have towed upwards of 30,000lbs behind it. I'm replacing the rear axle bearings this week, but other than that, (and the driveshaft U-joint bearings) everything is original.

I have 3 programs. 91 octane tow, 91 Octane performance and 94 octane performance. I have replaced the tranny 5 times so far. it is not because of towing. I did tow a light load once in the higher octane setting but it was less than 4000 lbs and only a short distance, <50 miles. I did rev to a higher point and kept it in 4th 1:1 ratio. The truck is definitely slower in tow but I cannot comment on the effects of an automatic as I have a manual transmission.
