Towing Tunes

I'm currious to hear from those who town with custom tunes. I have a jeep wrangler that I tow a decent amount and I had not seen too much info from people towing with tuners. I am particularly interested in people who tow heavy loads 6K+.

Tow tunes are great but if you're towing 6,000 lbs regularly than you'll need some other stuff to do it properly.

I tow my boat, which weighs around the 6,000 lbs mark. I use VMP tunes and it helps. They keep the converter locked and my tranny doesn't gear search. However, like Thump said, you will need more if you are towing regularly.

I dont understand really, I have towed 6k and more many times with a stock truck and it did fine. You will not need anything more to tow 6k, although you may want more if you are unhappy with the performance.

I dont tow that often and as backwards as this sounds I recently came from a 7.3 psd. I was just curious about tow tunes. I see a lot of people ordering them but nobody talks about towing anything.

Just see how it feels with the towing tunes. I'm sure you'll be fine. If not, just come back and let us know. Than you can get it to air bags for the rear, gears, cai, etc.

so let me get this straight...you want to tow with your jeep? Or tow your jeep? Either way, its going to end up a trailer...either sooner or later. Jeeps aren't meant to tow.

As with a good "performance" tune, tow tunes get more power and better transmission characteristics than stock. The tow tune is usually a tad richer than max performance, shifts a little softer and max rpm a little lower. I tow in the 6-8k range at least once a week and my 93 tow is the tune I run all the time. Love then partial throttle response and low end power. Having said that I also tow with various diesel trucks from work and can't imagine coming from a 7.3 to a 5.4. 6k plus isn't so much for the F150 suspension or brakes or even getting up to speed but if you highway tow very far you'll miss the diesels ability to lug along at 65-70 mph in OD and not break a sweat.

It doesn't hurt a stock truck to tow. Mine has over 1/4 million miles on it, and I have towed upwards of 30,000lbs behind it. I'm replacing the rear axle bearings this week, but other than that, (and the driveshaft U-joint bearings) everything is original.

I have 3 programs. 91 octane tow, 91 Octane performance and 94 octane performance. I have replaced the tranny 5 times so far. it is not because of towing. I did tow a light load once in the higher octane setting but it was less than 4000 lbs and only a short distance, <50 miles. I did rev to a higher point and kept it in 4th 1:1 ratio. The truck is definitely slower in tow but I cannot comment on the effects of an automatic as I have a manual transmission.

I'm sorry but I have a hard time believing that anyone pulls 30,000 lbs with a 1/2 ton truck.

Come on, you can do a lot better than that.
