Which Chip Or Programmer?
I have a 2008 F-150 FX4 5.4L. I just got the truck only. I only have 2,500 miles on it. I plan on buying a 28 ft camper. I live in the hills of West Virginia, so that plays a big factor into pulling the camper. I am putting a K&N intake on it soon and was wondering if a chip or programmer is worth the time and money or not and what would be the best chip or programmer for the truck?? Which is better , the chip or programmer??? Any help with this would be appreciated. Also, i had a 1999 Silverado, with a Hypertech Power Programmer, which made the truck run like hell, top speed was 120mph! It also cause the transmission to start slipping at 45,000 miles, and it bothers me now about gettin any kind of chip or programmer.

My advice is don’t jump the gun, do your research about cold air intakes and tuners. You can’t use a chip in a 08 so a programmer is what you need and since you live in WV you are probably close to Troyer Performance which is who I use and highly recommend
Check out the package deals and by being a member of this forum entitles you to a nice discount

Hi Nathan, I’m not sure of the exact cost anymore because it’s been four years plus since I got custom tuned. I have never had an issue with anything; totally trouble free and from all accounts, the custom tuning that's done to these transmissions now, actually extend the life of it. The biggest difference I noticed is the power and how well the transmission shifted; it made a big difference in total drivability
Give Mike a call and talk to him before you make a move, you won’t be sorry and F-150online members get a discount so don’t forget to mention that when you call
Check out the link now, I got it working

I'd go with a custom tuned Xcal2 or Xcal3 from VMPTuning.com. As far as air intakes go, I'd go with the AF1 3.0" or the S&B. The S&B is an enclosed filter design while the AF1 is an open filter design. The AF1 puts down a little bit better numbers but not much. The cost difference is quite a lot so with all that said, the S&B is the better value. Exhaust, I'd go with MRBP.

Why does everyone say use AF1 and S&B and all these other intakes. I work at a Ford Dealership and we had an 2005 F-150 in the shop that a customer had installed some type of aftermarket intake ( it had no name on it) and the truck wouldnt hardly run off of it. We swaped the air box off of a new truck and it was fine. So the customer bought a K&N and we installed it and it ran like a champ. I am on my 5th F-150 and I have always used K&N on all my trucks, def seen improvement in every one. Why are they so bad. I never had a problem with them. I am not saying that AF1 or the S&B are bad, just wondering why you guys dont say anything about K&N?

I had a quick chat with Mike of Troyer Performance about intakes and he said the AF1 did not cause a loss of TQ on the lower end as some intakes did. He also mentioned in his testing the AF1 gave the best improvement over the entire RPM range and this is why he suggest it.
I purchased one and have been very pleased, it is def a difference you can feel

What kind of warranty does the AF1 come with?? I put my truck through the paces. It sees 8 miles of rough back roads every day of the year. I dont want it falling apart on me. Which I doubt it would. What do you all think of the superchips programmer?? Good or Bad?? I just dont see spending over $1,000 for the tune from Troyer Perfromance since I live a good ways away from them. Not saying they dont know what they are doin, but thats a good chunk of money especially with fuel prices.

To be honest I have no idea what, if any warranty the AF1 comes with. It is a couple hose clamps, a steel tube, alum heat shield and a filter. I really cant think of any part that could fail.
As Thumper mentioned the tunes run 400 give or take and is the single biggest change you can make to these trucks for the price. People are usually blown away by the performance difference
