done with edge

A few months ago I bought a s&b intake for the truck. With the edge and the intake it set up a droning that was quite annoying, plus I didn't really notice any power changes. I removed the intake and threw it in the garage

A couple weeks ago I decided to reinstall the intake and try it again with the tune returned to stock. Surprise surprise the drone was gone and the power levels seemed nearly the same as with the programmer alone. Plus, as a side benefit, I discovered that my nagging issues with second gear had gone away.

So i'm done with the edge. I'm going to leave it hooked up as a gauge cluster for now and eventually i'm going to get some gryphon tunes for it but for now I just wanted to share my experiences.

Why in the world would you just throw it on? Sorry to tell you but it wasn't the S&B's fault. It was the canned tuning. I had the same intake with the Edge, guess what? It droned, droned bad. I got a custom tune from VMP Tuning and the drone went away. If you want to get custom tunes for your "Edge", you actually have to send it in to get converted to a Gryphon. Bill doesn't write custom tunes anymore for the Edge.

the winner

The edge alone: okay but I had a 2nd gear issue.
The s&b alone: seems to be same power as edge, no drone, no 2nd gear problem
edge and s&b: no appreciable power increase combined, annoying drone drone, 2nd gear problem.

Conclusion: the edge programs are removed, the intake stays

The programmer will be converted later when I can swing the funds, I just wanted to post up my experiences with this setup and my disapointment with the edge.

I feel ya!!!
I had a hard time grasping the fact i spent money on an intake and tuner but only being able to use one or the other!!!!!
And I had an even harder time grasping the fact that in order for the 2 mods to work together i needed to spend yet more money on something that i had no clue would positively work(custom tunes). but so far my custom tune has been good to me utilizing both mods effectively! BUT! look at it this way.... the money you would spend on "1" tune and the upgrade to a gryphon, is about a half tank of gas!
if that makes you feel any better..

funny -for being the designer of the canned tunes- the edge had problems with cais-but for a custom tuning charge- that tuning flaw can be corrected the second time around for more $ when it should have been found in r&d and not released to the public w/o enough testing

I still don't understand why you'd throw 200+ dollars in the trash can ...

Observation and experiences - the plastic intakes seem to have more droning issues, never had or heard of issues with the stainless ones ( AF1, K&N etc.. ). My Airaid droned bad, AF1, no drone at all.

I also had insane droning issues with my S&B and the canned tunes with my Gryphon... I was also preparing to rip out the S&B and chunk it. The droning was so bad that the truck was no longer enjoyable to drive.

I finally received my custom tunes from Bill a couple of nights ago... and the drone is gone! I am very excited, and Bill's 87 performance tune is heads and tails better than the canned Gryphon/Edge tune.

I couldn't be happier!

And no... I wouldn't have thought twice about ripping out the S&B if my custom tunes didn't kill the drone. With the canned tunes and the intake, my very expensive truck was no longer enjoyable to drive.

It's called building a product for the masses. It was assumed that the masses that would buy the Edge would not have an aftermarket intake, plus if they had one, there needed to be specific tuning for the particular one they had. The Edge specifiaclly says it is for a stock engine. The barbs you throw make you look bad.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, I haven't thrown any money away.
edit: I think i see where you may have gotten confused. When I removed the intake I put it in the garage, not the garbage. Better?

You, sir, are a complete MORON! We're so sick of your same old same old slams against Edge. ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

It's no wonder most people on this site dislike you. The only people who appreciate your snide jabs are you and your oversized airhead ego.

Stealth I'm not going to get into it really but it is kind of odd. I can understand problems with the tune files because it is hard to create a one size fits all type of tune but what about the problems with the software? So with that said, I do see where Phil is coming from ...

That's a lot better. I thought you really threw it in the trash. Now how dumb would that of been?
