Go ahead or Wait
Go ahead or Wait
I am new to all this stuff but i was wondering my truck is stock and i want to change that. I just know where to start. A few people on here are telling me to get a tuner and i planed on getting a Xcal 2 or 3 from VMP. But i was also going to either get the Roush Off road kit or a Flowmaster Super 44(havent decided) and a CAI. Would it be best to wait till i have both of those so i can get the most out of my tunes? I know i can always get new ones but why repeat the process in my opinion.
thats what i am going to do... i mean think about it. you are buying an Xcal 2/3 with 3 custom tunes. once you get the tuner you will have to then have 3 new custom tunes made to match the exhaust and the intake. if you go with the Xcal 3 then you could buy it now, run the canned tunes that are in it, then wait to give them your sheets when you get your mods. i personally am just going to wait.

I wanted my truck to sound like a truck should so my exhaust came before my intake and after my tuner which was needed due to my 22's.
So....yes the exhaust does matter
Drew, i think Thump he was referring to when to add the exhaust doesn't matter, compared to when installing an intake AND tuner. So its more preference apposed to necessity. but then again yhour right our trucks NEED to sound like trucks..

My S&B intake drones like crazy... I'm praying your custom tunes that I'm waiting on will kill it for me. Otherwise it is coming out. I purchased mine from Alon @ Modbargains, and they will not take it back unless S&B gives me a return authorization. The droning occurs at different RPMs, and right at common cruising speeds. It is almost impossible for me to avoid (even feathering the throttle to try to get around it), and it is unacceptably loud and obnoxious. If your tunes won't fix the drone, it looks like I will be out another $270 or so... it is so bad that I just can't deal with it... it makes driving unenjoyable.
Sorry to hijack, but I've sent you and Corey many emails checking on the status of my tunes... will one of you guys email me or call me with an update... please?
Thank you! I appreciate it!

Thump was refering to the fact that the exhaust doesnt matter "in the tuning sense" A CAI tends to make the trucks run on the lean side, in return its safer, and works better to purchase the CAI, and Tunes at the same time so that VMP or whoever can tune for that particular CAI.
I have to push AF1, or a K&N CAI..... I have had both will little or no drone.
Just my .02

Yes, I was only referring that a 'basic' exhaust is not going to effect anything concerning tuning. Also, the S&B only has drone when running canned tunes. I had the Edge and S&B, it'd drone at around 1500-2000 RPMs. Once I switched to custom tuning, it was gone. It's very off. A lot of people with the Edge said they had the same issue and I've heard one guy running a Superchips had the same problem.
