turners

do most all tuners have the diff settings for 91--87 gas or do you have to order they that way and is it better to get done with all the mods on your truck before buying a tuner, or can you get the reward of having the tuner installed with out all the mods?

The Edge is designed for stock engines and comes with canned tunes for 87 and 91 octane. A Gryphon is the same hardware as an Edge with the same canned tunes but can be custom tuned for your specific mods.

Depends on what kind of tuner you're buying. A custom tuned Xcal2, Xcal3, Livewire, Gryphon can all be tuned for whatever mod and whatever octane gas, etc. What kind of mods are you thinking about doing? A lot of stuff won't effect tuning. The most influential thing to tuning is going to be the air intake.

No problem. I know it's a lot of stuff and you're probably feeling overwhelmed.

I'll be ready to pick up a tuner within the next 5 years- clicked on the link you provided to the poster... it just seemed odd that the x2 and x3 would be so close in price. Is that just an introductory special... or will they remain that close? thoughts on comparitive advantages/disadvantages? ease of use... issues?

Go with the Xcal2, it's tried and true. The Xcal3 seems to still have a few bugs to be worked out. Also those prices include three custom tune files whatever you want. Gas mileage, performance, towing, performance + gas mileage, etc plus their octane ratings. By the way, 5 years?

nah, i just want to make sure i add as much as possible BEFORE the tunes - so that i get the most out of em. But i guess i can always just get them redone in the future.

My guess is that i'll be ordering tunes before summer is over.

I would like to caution you about adding an aftermarket intake on any of the 3v 5.4 engines as they tend to come from the factory running in a near lean condition. This is especially true of the 2004. Also, an Edge will work just fine, but then again, the canned tunes in an Edge are for a stock intake, so you would still run the risk of running lean. My advise, if you are just wanting about 25 additioonal horsepower is to get the Edge without changing the intake. Then later, if you want an intake, update your Edge to the Gryphon at www.powerhungryperformance.com with Bill's custom tunes.

One other thing, when buying a used tuner, verify that it was returned to stock before they removed it, or it will not work on your truck.
