87 or 91 octane

Bust out some snacks cuz this could be a long thread....

So I couldn't find anywhere else to put this but after reading about all of the posts about the custom tunes and people complaining that 93 octane is more expensive then 87 octane consider this.

Where I live Gas is currently
$4.00 a gallon for 87
$4.18 a gallon for 91

That is only 4.5% more expensive. Consider the same thing back in 2002 when gas was 1.20 (oh how I miss those days) and premium was 1.40. Thats makes premium 16% more expensive.

In my opinion for the increase in fuel economy which I'm sure will be at least 4.5% it would actually end up being better to run 91 octane!

Are my calculations correct? I'm sure that this would be the case with custom tunes, that is... that you would get an increase of at least 4.5% between 87 octane and 91 octane.

... im a nerd:santa:

Well I run 91 in my truck, i have the Edge programer, I run it becuse i get better gas milage running 91... Just after i got back from my deployment i went to to meet my mom and to pick up my dog, On the way there i was running the 87 tune, the person that was watching my truck for me didn't want to pay for 91.. but any ways on the way there i made it 337 miles on 20 gals. thats 16.85mpg on the HW then on the way back i changed it to the 91 setting and made it 371 miles on only 19gals... thats 19.5mpg.. so that alone is worth it to me to run the "good stuff" haha that and my truck just seems to like running on 91 better.. I expect my milage to get a little better once i have bill do some tweeking to my edge and turn it into a gyrmon...haha

Sheesh, was it up hill on the way there, and downhill all the way back?

You don't say whether or not you have a tuner. You will not get any gains unless you are running a tune to take advantage of 91. In fact, you could be doing damage by increasing carbon deposits. If you do have a tuner and are running a 91 program, then yes, typically, you get better mileage as well as better performance. The key is to match octane to the tune you are running.

Everybody rolling off the lot gets to use 87 octane and achieve mediocre results. I spent a lot of money for custom tuning. It does not cost any more for that tuner to write a tune for 91 octane, than it does to write a tune for 87 octane. For the same cost, it only made sense to achieve maximum performance with the highest grade fuel possible. Not using the custom tune for a higher octane grade would just be a waste of my money for the custom tuning.

I spent the money to have a tune written so that my truck is able to run a higher octane fuel for maximum performance. Now I'm going to enjoy it.

Besides, who cares what the mileage difference is? What are we talking about? 1-2 miles per gallon at best?

And what's the big deal when it comes to cost? We put in about 20 gallons at every fill-up. No matter what the gas prices are, the price difference is @ $0.20 more per gallon, and every fill-up cost an extra $4. So what? Even @ $5 per gallon, my $100 fill-up will cost $104. It's only $4 for me to enjoy my truck. If you can't afford the extra $4 at the pump, then it's time to look @ buying a Honda Civic because you can't afford to drive a truck.
