EDGE and running lean

Quick question for you experts:

This is more precautionary than anything else. I've done my homework on everything before I installed all my mods, but I have a question.

I have the EDGE (older version without the gauge display), a K&N FIPK and just added Magnaflow Ture Duels (2.25" pipe with an X-pipe). I have read the issues with running lean on the 04+s, but I have an 03 and have not had any noticable problems what so ever with my current set up.

My question is, would I know or is there a way to tell if I am running lean at all, even though I haven't tripped any CELs. I want to PREVENT any future problems if possible. I don't plan on adding Headers, or E-fans or really any more performance mods, but I just want to make sure that I won't run into any issues furthjer down the road before it's too late. What should I be checking now to make sure I am not lean? Again, I haven't tripped any CELs but is there something else I can do to make sure this won't be an issue. Or should I not worry about it?

Thanks,

You CAN run lean and not hear a pinging (pre-detonation), but if you do hear pinging, you are definitely running lean. You probably can not be for certain without doing a dyno or hooking it up to testing equipment. I really expect you are ok, as most of the lean issues were with 2004s, which actually tended to run lean from the factory.

Thanks fellas. I really appreciate the info. I had planned to change out my plugs anyway, it's about time. But I am not hearing any pinging and as BlueJay stated, most Lean issues with the EDGE and other mods have been on the 04s and up. I figured I didn't have any issues on my 03, but I plan on driving the truck forever and can hopefully hand the keys over to my 1 year old son when he turns 16. I know, it'll probably never happen but one can still dream.

She's purring like a kitten now and I just want to do any and all preventative maintenance to keep it that way.

back off on the timing a little, or use a higher octane gas if you are running 87.

For me, when I ran an Edge, my engine compartment and exhaust were extremely hot!

I had the older model #2000, and my 98 4.6L was ALWAYS rich, with all my mods the A/F was still high 11's and low to mid 12's, so lean should be the least of your worries.
