Edge 15050 seems to be unstable

Unhappy Edge 15050 seems to be unstable

You folks seem to know the most about Edge Evo's compared to the other forums, so I'm asking for your help. Here's the deal...

About 2 weeks ago, I purchased an Edge Evolution 15050/EEF2100 for my 1998 4.6L F-150. Everything seemed OK initially, got it programmed to level 2 successfully, but it's started acting up. The main problem is that it shuts off when it's trying to do something, such as change the backlighting level. I got ahold of Edge's tech support last week and asked what the heck. They said it was probably a defective cord, so they sent me a new one. It got here today, and the problem remains. Installed the new cord, didn't touch the unit on my way to work and it was fine. Jumped in the truck after work, tried to dim it a little, then the guages read 0 and then it died. Hit the menu button to bring it up again, and it died again.

What's the deal? The only other similar situation I've heard of required a diode in the unit. ( https://www.f150online.com/forums/ar.../t-287463.html ) Mind you, it sounds more like a capacitor to me...

I'll have to try to get ahold of tech support again on Monday, and I'll be going back to my retailer to see if they'll offer a refund if necessary tomorrow.

I've updated the firmware and calibration, and it did not help.

It freezes once in awhile when changing settings. Also, when pressing buttons on the default screen (such as when changing brightness) it may not respond (no beep, no change) and the guages display 0 temporarily, but that may be normal.

I got my edge within the last 2 weeks as well and I also have a list of issues with this device:

1) Alerts do not work as expected. Spark, Engine Temp and Cylinder Head temp work intermittently at best. In fact I can repeatedly generate a spark alert simply by pressing the up button to change the display brightness. Engine Speed and Vehicle speed alerts do not work at all.

2) I can repeatedly lock up the unit by going into programming mode with the key off.

3) My device was very flakey when I first installed it and seemed to be locking up randomly and often.

4)Connecting to the unit with Lightning software is flakey. You cannot have evo connected to the truck and to a PC at the same time, it just does not work. This means that the feature of using your PC to read DCTs does not work with lightning.

5) Getting the speedometer to match my GPS by adjusting tire size seems to be a very time consuming process as the only way seems to be by trial and error.

6) For some reason the unit is reading a gear ratio of 3.31 when my gears are 3.55. Default tire size is 2316 (which is odd because I had Dealer increase this setting when I put on the larger 285/70/17 BFG AT)

7) If you accidentally leave the unit at the main menu with the key off, it will always stay on and can possibly drain your battery.

I am also disappointed with the limited PIDs that are available as compared to the evo for 2004 and up. My truck already has a Tach, Speedometer, Outside Air Temp sensor and voltage meter. Spark advance and inaccurate MPGs don't do too much for me either. I don't see why some of these parameters cannot be displayed.

I must say though that I definitely did notice a difference in torque and power compared to stock, so that functionality is working.

I am sad to hear that Bill Cohron will no longer be providing custom tunes for evolutions and because no one else currently does it makes me feel like my brand new $500 dollar programmer is now obsolete.

I have read many posts in this forum that say that edges technical support leaves something to be desired. I must say that I personally have not yet dealt with them but my confidence is low.

I will be putting a call into edge on Monday however to find out if they are able to fix some of these deficiencies in a timely matter. If not I think that my position is to return this edge back to where I bought it from and invest in an XCAL and Scanguage.

I realize that this post does not address your specific issue, but I wanted to make you aware of the issues that another user with the same device is having and also I hope that this is something that you can you can watch for once you get your device to stop shutting down!

I also hope that any other members with the 15050/EEF2100 edge will comment on the above and let us know if they have seen the same issues. We 97-03 guys need to stick together!!

I have a newer model edge (EEF24XX) and have experienced some of the same problems.
dealer changed my tire size also, but this is not reflected with the edge. so every time I reprogram I have to correct the tire size.
it also wants to tell me I have 3:73 gear when I actually have 3:55.
it never wants to save my gear selection. I always have to change it twice to get it to stick to 3:55.
I also have a HORRIBLE exhaust drone from the cai and edge combo.
I have putt all my faith in BILL to correct this issue. ordered his custom tunes last night. (crossing fingers)

It comes with default gear and tire sizes, you are supposed to enter what you have when you change settings. That is normal. Now, once you have entered all the custom settings you want, and program, if you want to go back and change one, you can select save the custom settings, and you can then change just the one you want to, you don't lose all the others.
