Used programmers?

I have heard a lot of bad stories revolving around buying a used programmer and it causing the vehicle to not start at all. Has anyone heard anything like that? I've also heard that in order to use a used programmer the original owner must set back to the stock tune but that still means the programmer will only remember that tune and not yours. I am quite confused about the whole thing and any clarification would be great.

My suggestion to you is read up on it here on this forum. There’s pros & cons both ways, so what I’m saying is either or; got to research it a little bit

Used equipment is not necessarily bad by any means

Look into it & Good Luck & "Welcome to the forum silverbullet463"

I have had (2) used tuners. The superchips 1714 (Off the Shelf Tuner) and a used X-Cal 2.

Have had no issues with either one of them.

Here's the thing!!

Make sure the one you purchase is not VIN Locked! and that the vehichle it was on was returned back to stock. Otherwise you have to go through the trouble of shipping it off, and getting it unlocked and that will cost you money!

You can find some great deals on this sites classified section, and sometimes on Ebay.

As far as the truck not starting.......... the post I have read with that happening was with the EDGE Tuner. Not sure what the deal is with that.

If you dont allow the tuner to complete the upload and unplug it to soon you'll screw the file up and it may result in the truck not starting. As long as you follow the directions, use common sense, you should be fine!

As long as you have a working tuner, that is not vin-locked it should work fine. Just make sure the tuner is the CORRECT one for you application!

Good Luck!

Cool

My vote goes for the Edge. I just purchased a used one off e-bay. Installed it last week. Running level II. I am very happy with it. Definately a huge improvment over stock. HTH.

Did you get the one with the in-cab monitor or just the programmer. The in cab monitor looks pretty badass.

Well I have had both, the 2000 and the 2100, I like both, but the abilty to customize the 2100 is great, and I love having the gauges. The 2000 is a better option for a "less experienced" person and one who doesn't want all the "bells and whistles." I sold mine recently for $150, so they go for alot cheaper than the 2100.

I'm still a noob when it comes to programmers. I got the 2000. I wasn't sure what to expect so I chose the less expensive option. I'm very satisfied with the 2000. It is a very much improved over stock. So far I've only used it on level II. You can also have custom tunes installed if you are looking for even more. I am going to do this soon.

The 2100 is nice. I'm just not sure it is worth the extra money. HTH.

The 2000 also has diagnostics. I had the 2000 and now I'm running the 2100 and just got back from the strip, and my truck is now slower! But my custom tunes will be here before next week, so I hope to run better then.

From what im reading here its better to go with the 2000 due to my overall lack of experience and from what joshmac4.6 is saying it makes more power which is ultimately what im after.

I got a used xcal2 and 3 custom tunes from Troyer for $300 total. That is a damn good deal, and as far as performance per dollar, i have gotten one of the best deals of anyone on here. Just make sure your xcal2 aint VIN locked, and you will have excellent results. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
