will custom tuning fix my harsh shifting

Hello all,

My o4 f150 has a harsh downshift between 15-25mph. It is faily repeatable especiallty downshifting while towng uphill. Even though there is a TSB for this issue for the 05 model, the dealer says I have the latest PCM program for he 04 model and should just except it. Would custom tuning from either Bill or Troyer solve his issue?

Thanks

And so can bill, thats one of the main reason I had Bill do a custom tune for my edge.

Both Bill or Troyer will be able to help with your shifting.

Certainly custom tuning can change the shifting characteristics of your truck. Obviously, no tuning will help if you have a mechanical problem. For instance, say torque converter lock up / unlock fails, as happened in my own application. You've flushed that tranny lately?

People will promote different tuners to you, but frankly any custom tuner can make your shifts how you want them, just be sure to mention to them how you want it shifting and how firm/soft you want it.

I asked for mine to shift progressively firmer as i push deeper into the throttle, and it is perfect.

Yes, a custom written tune(s) can help that nasty shifting..

All three of the ones mentioned should be able to help you out. I'd try getting in touch with all of them over the phone, talk to them about your issues and see which one sounds the most reasonable.

Barring the bad clutch or tq converter any of those guys should be able to hook ya up.

My problem (in my mind) was way too soft shifting. Troyers tunes fixed that, got 'em just perfectly firm and crisp.

I'd say contact all three of those and be as detailed as you can with your problem. They can all probably fix it, just get the best price.

Bear in mind that any of their fixes will involve a tuning device (Xcal or Edge) plus tuning. $400 or more.

Cheap when compared to a new tranny tho. Plus you'll get some nice performance gains.

It looks like we've heard from everyone except for the tuners themselves.

will custom tuning fix my harsh shifting

Hello All,

Thanks for all the response.

The dealer told me that it is a software issue but even thought the TSB exactly discribes the issue, there is no fix for the 04 model. A while back I had the PCM reflashed to help with the famous slow throttle response and I think this shifting issue started after that. Anyway, even though the truck is an 04 model, it has less than 24K miles. (use it for towing mostly, gas is just too expensive in California)

So I'm going with a custom tune just need to decide between Troyer or Bill. On the fence like many on the furum.

Again, thanks for ll the input...

There's no reason that the shifting issues you are experiencing can't be addressed and resolved. The only hurdle is to determine the exact cause(s) of the issue. Some questions for you:

Is it harsh because the converter is locked, or because there's too much pressure? At what throttle and MPH does it occur? How much load do you have? Does it do it unloaded? Does it do it on flat ground, or just up a hill? Is it a 2-1 downshift, 3-2 downshift, or a 3-1 downshift?

Answers to those questions will go a long way to helping you get what you're lookng for.

Hope this helps.

Bill

Man, this is all one reason it pisses me off that Ford doesn't offer a manual transmission on these trucks...

With the stock programming the shifts were slower than what I'd be able to do myself with a stick and clutch. Just soft and slow.

Troyers tunes fixed that, big-time. The shifts now are quicker than I could ever do myself, but still never "hard-shifts", nothing violent. Just freakin' sweet, the way they should have been all along.

Again, I'd highly recommend Troyer's tuning because that's what I have experience with, but you also probably can't go wrong with Bill's tuning on the Edge or VMP's tunes.

STRK_BY, check this out...

TSB 04-21-14 (Hesitation on Acceleration)

Maybe it'll help.
