gears AND TROYER STAGE 2

IF YOU go to troyerperformance.com, they have all the details on the packages but essentially stage 2 is tune and tuner, exhaust, cai, e fans, and underdrive pulleys, and stage 3 adds dynatech supermaxx header with high flow cats and more powerful coil packs

Thanks guys... I am thinking gears are going to be the way to go for the time being. Eventually the truck will get the tuner and some other stuff, but it will be nice to get my 'lost power' back. The stage 2 kit would be like adding a band-aid to the problem, I lost power with the lift/tires and should re-gear to get back to a level playing field... I can always add power from there.

So, 4.56 or 4.88 gears? I do a mix of freeway and city driving (about 60% freeway, 40% city). I tend to drive about 70mph (GPS speed, not idicated) on the open road, and intend to tow only small loads weighing less than 5,000pounds about twice a year.

You've got 35s right? Go with 4.56s !! I'd get the tuner as well since you need to recalibrate for the tire change as well as the gear change otherwise your speedometer/odometer is going to be way off as well as your shift points.

1). Yes, 35x12.50-R17 ProComp Mud terrains

2). I know the speedometer is off, and will be that much more confused with the gears... I didn't consider the shift points though, thank-you for pointing that out.

I was thinking 4.56 as well, but the 4.88s seem like they might give a bit more umph. I think I am going to re-gear and add just a Troyer or other custom tune, and save for the exhaust, pulleys, e-fans, intake, etc... later.

So, gears and a tuner.

I'd stick with the 4.56s if you do any highway driving and you care about your mileage. I had 4.88s with 37s which will be the same as your set-up. It has plenty of umph and I wouldn't want a shorter gear considering I did drive the vehicle on the highway.

Also, just throwing this out there because I've had great results with him and his tunes is Justin at VMP Tuning. www.VMPTuning.com Justin used to work for SCT, the company who produces the Xcal2 and Xcal2, and is the 2nd largest retailer of SCT products. Not to mention he'll be able to get you tunes in a week or two which is a lot shorter than the competition.

So VMP is a viable alternative to TP? Not waiting a year and a half for tunes would be nice... plus, my motor is 100% stock, so most anybody with knowledge could tune it (it's not like I have cams, different injectors, long-tubes and a dual exhaust).

Does VPM offer the 3 tunes thing like Troter, say I wanted:

87 economy
91 towing
91 performance

Is that possible?

yes sir.... i have also had great luck with bama chips as well although i do have TP tunes on my truck

http://www.bamachips.com/

Also I wouldn't bother with the economy tune. I found I get the same mileage on my 87 economy as the 87 performance, it may even be better on the performance.

Yes VMP is a very viable option, either way they are both going to be mail order tunes.

Call Justin at VMP Tuning and he'll go over everything with you.

I got 4.88's and 35's. my rpms at 80 are around 2500. Theres plenty of around town "omph, enough to turn heads when people realize that the big ole rolling mass of metal and rubber actually has a bit of speed and acclearation to it

To the OP i would buy the gears first!!!
I have 3.55 gears and 35 inch tires also. I have troyer custom tuning, a AF1 intake and X-Piped true duel exhaust. That is close to the same as the kit you are considering. You can add all of those parts and it will help some but you will still want gears.
The bottom line is it's still gonna have no nutz until you do the gears!! The tires and rims were the cause for your power loss to begin with so adress the culprit of the problem to start with. I wish i would have went that way to begin with!!

Same here, I just hooked the Edge back up and use it for display only now, and after having both, I would go with the Stage II again. Custom tune throttle response is great and the efan/pulleys make the off line launch seem better. Gears can follow, since you only have 3.55's. I've had 04, 05 and 06 and they were all pretty much the same stock - throttle lag, hesitation and just pure slugs with no midrange power. That's why I would tune first.
