Well I was at the local drag strip with my truck yesterday racing a chevy, 2wd 4 door on stock tires/rims. His had an exhaust, programmer, and intake. I got him on the jump by over a length, but then he pulled on me. Afterwords his friend asked me if mine was programmed and I told him no. I told him I was going to get a xcal2 with custom tunes, but he said that the shop he works can do it for me. They just plug in their laptop to the truck, and programm away. For 350 you get as many tunes as you want. I can go up there one week and get a 93 octane performance tune, and the next week go back and change it to have a 87 mpg. I think I am going to head on up there this week some time and make the plunge into getting a tuned truck
Sounds like he should have taken you by more. Ask around if anyone else has his tunes. You already know Troyers tunes are good. I bet if you had Troyers 93 performance tune the race would have had a different out come.

He said he plugs in his laptop and we drive around while he sets everything. It is some software that starts with a C, lol. That is all I remember. What would be the downsides?

a downside would him being inexperienced and tuning it wrong and you blow your motor, i have seen it happen before, i have a diagnostic at my auto shop class in conroe i can plug into any car and change the parameters, we did it on my friends 5.9 dodge(gross) and you can definately tell a difference
Does he tune with Chrome? Chrome is a freeware that you can find online... in theory, anybody with a laptop and cord could tune your vehicle. Including people that have no knowledge of fuel injection and the workings of a motor. Chrome is an excellent tunning program in the hands of a tuner that has access to tuning tools i.e. a dyno, timing equipement, and meters to read your exhaust gases. Make sure he is legit, and isn't going to destroy your motor.
I just texted him and he said that it is the ford software. THey are able to edit it and restore it to default settings though. I am out of warrente so I dont really care about turining it back to stock. He has done multiple trucks and has great results. He is going to let me drive his truck before I get mine tuned. He said he has had his tuned for months with no problems. He has tuned around 30-40 trucks without a single issue.
Also he said that running a 93 octane tune would give me better gas milage. Is this true? Would it be enough to out weigh the cost of the premium fuel?
