Can a tuner be used to fix/diagnose my engine problem?

I've been having a problem with pinging for quite some time, as described in another thread.

At this point, all I can figure is a computer problem, with no luck on any of my other part replacements.

I am worried that the computer has a funky program load, and in the end, I would like to be able to switch between some modes, for when I tow my classic car around on a trailer, and for performance, etc.

Perhaps I can hit two birds with one stone with the proper tuner/programmer?

You can diagnose the problem only if the engine has thrown a code, as far as the programmer idk. If you have a warranty i would take it to the dealer.
