Compatible CAI with Edge?
I am new to this site and to the edge evo. I recently bought an Edge Evo for my 04' F150 with the 5.4L. I was looking for a new intake but have been reading about the problems with performance intakes and the edge. I love my edge, and wouldn't think of getting rid the programmer for an intake, but... has anyone found an intake that has not caused any lean codes on the Edge?
I run my programmer on level 2, and have never attempted a custom tune. I was looking at the outlaw intake...
Also, I am having one other issue with my programmer that I was wondering if anyone else had. It seems that sometimes when I hit the gas enough to make the truck downshift (taking off faster on a hill...not hitting if hard but enough to go down a gear), it seems the transmission slams into the lower gear making a clanking sound. The shift is not very firm as I am not really punching it, but I hear a clanking sound when it downshifts. Anyone else have this issue?
THANKS,
Sean

You'll find tons of great info here, not necessarily from me.. LOL
The Edge tuner is designed primarily to be used with stock trucks as far as intakes go. You can adjust for tire size and a few other mods but it's programmed for your stock intake.
If you want a cai then the 3" AF1 is really your only option. It's a great intake kit and won't cause you to run lean. Any other kit and you're taking your chances.
There's a member here, ASEmechanic, Bill, who can help you with some custom programming for the Edge. I'm sure he can help you with that hard shifting, you shouldn't be having that.
All that being said, for the best performance from an F150 I'd recommend an Xcal 2 or Xcal 3 from Troyer Performance. I've had the Xcal 2 for a few months now and couldn't be happier. And the shifts are the best part. Just dead on. No gauges like the Edge, but the custom tuning is excellent. If you want the gauges then have Troyer do the Livewire programmer.
Troyer can also do the programmer, intake and exhuast all in one package. It's a very good deal.. I wish I'd done it instead of one piece at a time like I did.
AF1 3" and the Airraid are the only two intakes that add significant power without leaning out your engine on the 04+ 3v engines.
I will agree with TexEdition on the custom tunes though. I have had both the edge and the TP Xcal2 now, and although i did love the edge on my stock truck, the Xcal2 with intake and exhaust is a world of difference.

IF what TexEdition and mSaLL150 are saying and true you can run the AF1 3" with no lean issues and dont want to worry about taking a chance might want look into a AF1 3". I myself almost bought one but with with the K & N being much cheaper and just so happens it went well with my setup!

Good Luck! :santa:

Lean AFR with K&N FIPK and Edge
Hmm. It appears that several have had good luck with the AF1. It may be worth researching.

My experience with Airaid - annoying drone at 1800 rpm. My bro had same on his 05 FX4 with the Edge and Airaid. Roush also labeled the Airaid. Go figure. Alot of $$ for cheap plastic. My Airaid's back in the box, if you were close, you could have it cheap.
IMO - with that tuner, for the same $$ you can get an AF1 with 3" tube. Some swear by the other plastic intakes. Whatever your choice, get one with a metal intake tube ( stainless or whatever ).

THANKS for all of the info. It sounds like the AF1 might be a good choice. Kind of weird that only some people have problems with the intakes and some don't. I will also look into troyer performance, I eventually want an exhaust as well, so maybe I should buy it all from them.
I will have to try getting the mechanic Bill for my other issue...sounds like he is the Edge man! Must be busy...
Has anyone had any problems with the open intakes making the air intake temp too hot? The stock intake set-up is somewhat of a "cold air" intake, so I was wondering if the shield and seal did a good enough job keeping the warm air off the open filter???
Thanks again! Sean
