To datalog or not to datalog? That is the question.

Hey guys,

I was reviewing my email containing the datalog instructions and I was wondering if you guys thought it was worth it or not to try and datalog my truck. I could probably rent 3 hours of dyno time or so for a little over $100 but is it really worth it to pick up a few hp?

I mean I already got the Troyer tunes based on the sheets I sent him. Is there a lot more to be gained?

What do you guys think?

I was wondering the same thing as well, but only because there's no dyno locally I could go to. Haven't seen an answer yet tho.

If you bought it from troyer they will charge you after a month for the new tunes

It says you have 60 days to do it in their paperwork. I will have the tunes two weeks tomorrow.

Is there no more input from anybody else? Have many guys have datalogged on here that have the Xcal and then sent it in to him? Did you notice a lot of results?

I personally think if your not having any problems, dont bother. A data log will only fine tune it. Not worth the money.

That's what I'm thinking.

I spoke to Mike Troyer on the phone yesterday and asked him this question. He said it really wasn't necessary as his tune is already on par for my mods but it couldn't hurt as he loves to look at data.

Just FYI.

If for no other reason, I'd do it to verify A/F ratios. I was running rich and would not have known if I didn't take it to a dyno.

Though NCSU brings up a valid concern, I didn't datalog and when I did dyno at TP my tunes were already solid so I would say don't bother unless there's an issue or heavy modifications or you're just curious.

Curiosity is what drove me to datalog. I wanted to see what my truck could do on a dyno. It just happened to be a good thing that I did! Plus I'm a mechanical engineer, so that kinda thing is right up my alley

Yea I work around a bunch of you engineers though not all mechanical. As the only geologist in the office I tend to drink heavily immediately after work.
Just kidding with ya but I guess the **** retentive wore off on me b/c I just had to dyno mine even though my tunes were already fine.

Most engineers I know would be right there drinking with you!

What were your dyno results? I see you made the trip out to Troyer's, how was that?

Yea I did get one run chart but not all of them and not the best one. It was so late by the time I left Mike's shop that day that we all just wanted to blaze plus I had my girlfriend and mom getting twitchy waiting for me and Mike and the gang were all still there after hours on a Friday. I need to scan the one I have and get it in my gallery at least though. My best runs were mid 240's hp and low to mid 290's tq. I run a 4x4 5.4 and 35's with 4.56's, Efans, pulleys, AF1 3.5 at dyno time......and have since added a 2.25-inch dual X pipe system (I had a single 2.5 crush bent set up at dyno time which didn't help the numbers). I really wanted to dyno the stock intake for curiosity sake while there but the day just blazed by with install of pulleys and fans then dyno.

How do you like the 4.56's? I'm getting some 35s this week or next and am seriously considering a gear swap.

IMO a gear swap is part of getting large, heavy tires. Pick the gear based on your driving style but 4.56 is all around pretty good for 35 imo. You can use this http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html to compare all kinds of scenarios and if you set it up correctly it's spot on.
