XCAL2 Tuner ?'s

Edge, Troyer, superchips, diablo...

Then I see that the tuning is done by VMP, Brennspeed, etc...
Is the chip a standard algorythym? Or after you install, you need to have a
"tuner" tune it for you?

Sorry for the stupid questions, I tune 737's not truck engines.
"I.E." I have never "chipped" a engine, plenty of building, and machining on naturally asperated motors.

I guess I need someone to xsplain all this new fangled stuff.
Anyone up to it?

The big tuners I've seen on this forum are Troyer, VMP, and Bamachips.

I understand that, but I've seen "Troyer chip tuned by brenspeed"
or "Troyer chip tuned by VMP"
I'm not understanding. Do you purchase a chip and then have a tuner "tune" it to your truck?
Or call up Troyer, tell them how you use your truck or what you want out of it, and just install everything yourself?

Sorry if this sounds stupid to some of you but I just want to make sure when I decide to make my purchase it's not going to be something I'll regret later.
Thanks

im kinda new to this also. but i'll give it a shot.

you can get a tuner (x-cal2, edge, etc.) it will have a "canned" or generic tune for your vehicle.

then you can get a custom tune (troyer, VMP, etc.) these tunes are written specifically for your vehicle. and helps to maximize performance from YOUR vehicle specific mods (exhaust, intake, etc.).

the custom tunes come on a tuner (x-cal2, edge, etc.) but the actual program is written by a tuner (troyer, VMP, etc.)

hope that helps. like i said im kinda new at it myself

Ok, I think I'm getting it.
I purchase a Troyer chip, after telling him what I want out of my rig, or what mods I've done.
He writes and loads the "tune" into my custom chip, I install and down the road I go?
Or do I need to purchase installation stuff or what?

when you order you will have to fill out some worksheets that ask all kinds of questions. answer those questions and send them back. that is how they will write the tunes. however the tunes will come on a tuner. for example the x-cal2 i ordered i chose 87 performance, 87 tow, and 93 performance. then when all is said and done you plug your tuner into the obdII port load the tune and that is it.

also you can fine tune your tunes by datalogging after the install. but that is a whole nother story and i dont know how to do it.

A Chip or Programer is a piece of hardware. A tune is a piece of software that is places on a chip or programmer. There are 'Canned' tunes which are just generic, work on anything tunes, or a 'Custom' tune, which is done specifically for YOUR vehicle and how YOU plan to use it.

Xcall2 is NOT a Troyer thing...It is a piece of hardware made by SUPERCHIPS, it just so happens that Troyers use this product to put their custom tunes on.

Exactly. As does VMP and Bamachips.

Make sense to original poster?
