Tuner for 4.6
Tuner for 4.6
I just bought a 2007 F-150 FX2 with the 4.6l. Great truck, I love it! Question is, do I need to put on exhaust and intake before I chip it? Also, what tuner would you guys recommend? Thanks!
Many people bash the edge as a tuner but I have it and am happy with it.
I love the added gauging vs the factory 'too late' lights. It also serves as a MPG calculator but nothing beats the hand and paper on fillups.
Here is my thoughts on it vs the XCal2.
Its a 4.6L. There is not going to be that much a HP pulled from it vs the 5.4L gains. I would rather have a mild tune myself since the lower end handicapped due to internals compared to the 5.4L. I plan on keeping my junk for a long time and don't want to 'push' the engine and tranny that hard whereas it may have problems later. I mean that on both sides, the tune and me stomping it because the power gains. With the gauging, I can also monitor how hard I am on the engine in my **** mind closer than factory metering.
Now on exhaust, find a Magnaflow system you like. I think it depends on where you want it to exit for your taste and look.
Intake, IMO, I think most aftermarket systems work fine for daily drivers and the occasional wild hair. Remember it is still a 4.6L and maybe even if it was a 5.4L. I don't think that many intakes are really neccessary for a tuned engine with an exhaust. I can see them for internally modded or of course supercharged systems but the typical 4.6L and 5.4L naaaw. I have the S&B system since it is boxed under the hood vs an open system. I got it for the motorhead geek factor.
BUT BACK TO ANSWER YOUR ORIGINAL QUESTION:
I would exhaust it first, chip it, then intake. Is it neccessary, I don't think so.

The "custom" tunes will do a better job then the canned tunes. A couple companies do the custom tunes and some can get the 4.6 to put down 5.4 numbers on a dyno. Really the 4.6 is a very stout powerplant that is severly de-tuned IMO. You hear of very few problems with them and I havent seem a single mention of a tuner causing engine or transmission failure.
