Troyer First Impressions...

Worksheets were recieved on the 15th of June, and the tunes were in my email box this afternoon when I got home from work. Immediately went to work loading new tunes into my XCal2 and finding where I stashed my AF1. AF1 installed and tunes loaded and went for a lil test drive. Immediately noticed a difference in power and tranny shift points. Awesome. However, I don't think my PCM is as smart as I give it credit for....its gonna need a bunch of drive cycles to get rid of some the dead spots in the DBW system. Only two dead spots I had (and one of them corrected itself by the end of the second drive cycle) were at relatively light throttle from a dead stop, and at WOT from a dead stop. But I know those should correct themselves over time with more driving. (My last truck, tuned by Troyer, had a few hiccups that over time the adaptive learning cured). Overall first impressions:

We'll give the new tunes/intake the award.

so you call those little computer hiccups dead spots.. I had a few but it is better now...they were mostly when climbing hills at acceleration with a little pause almost like no fuel and then BAM WOT. Haven't had it back to the mountains so not sure if the adaptive learning is done.

Will be taking it up on Thursday so will find out

I'm actually experiencing this one and have been for probably the last month. Not sure if it has something to do with the new exhaust I had put on last month or not, but I have had my Troyer tunes installed since May and never really noticed this in the beginning. Seems it accelerates pretty good up to about 50 mph and then the RPMs drop to around 1500 and the truck slowly climbs to my highway cruising speed (about 72 mph). Now if I put my foot into the gas pedal the RPM's pick up immediately and the trucks gets up to speed fast, but I shouldn't have to mash the gas pedal to get it up to speed.

I also did not have the exhaust installed when I filled out my sheets back in March so they were not part of my mods I listed. Do you think I should give Troyer a call and get his opinions?

Probably be a good idea as your new exhuast has changed the back-pressure and EGTs.

Did you run the tunes before the new exhuast was on and have the same issue?

At any rate, since they ask about exhuast system changes on the worksheets it must be something he takes into account when writing the tunes.

Definetly give 'em a call, if nothing else I'm sure they'd be interested to hear about this and can probably help ya out..

Does this occur a little after the 3-4 shift? I have VMP tunes and what you described is similar to what mine does. Upon light acceleration the truck pulls nicely through 3rd and even after the 3-4 shift keeps the converter unlocked and keeps pulling then it falls flat as the converter prematurely and too quickly locks up. Give it a little and the converter unlocks and it pulls again. The stock programming actually handles the converter behavior in OD better IMO. I have Troyer tunes on order as well and explained my converter behavior complaints in my worksheets so hopefully he can do something. Really though Ford has dropped the ball the last few years with these 4 speeds. It needs a .82 or so in between 3 and OD. Overall though good to hear the positive review, I'm looking forward to seeing what Troyer's tunes are like.

Exactly. I will be giving the folks at Troyer a call tomorrow and getting his opinion.
