Edge downshifts harsh

My wife has an 05 F-150 that we have had the edge on since it came out (was in on one of the first group buys). This weekend we went on a short trip pulling a waverunner behind and went to pass several slow vehicles on the highway and it downshifted very harsh. It acted like it would slip for a second and then clunk into gear. This usually occured when we were in overdrive and the transmission was trying to jump down two gears (really slow traffic) to get the power it needed to pass. Do i just have really old programming in my edge, does it need to be updated, or is their something wrong. Otherwise it seems to work just fine. Thanks.

Hi.

Regardless of whether or not an update will help reduce your harshness (not a bad idea to check with Edge in any case, though), your tranny will live far longer if you get in the habit of never forcing a 4-2 WOT downshift - especially while towing.

Rather, turn off O/D if you anticipate the need to nail it to pass; WOT 3-2 shifts are fine. Try this and see if it improves the condition any.

BTW - tranny being maintained? Just askin'...

Cheers

Also what program were you running? You never want to tow in level 3. I have a 5spd but i would assume that the shift points in level 3 are a little more aggressive.

The truck only has 33k on it, I was towing a waverunner, can hardly tell it's back their, people haul heavier loads in the back of their trucks, i don't think pullin in OD is going to kill it. I did not have it WOT either, i just went to pass a couple of slow moving cars and it got a little excited and jumped from OD down to two gears (2nd or 3rd?). I am not used to driving it as i have a diesel with a manual and i can stomp on it and not have to worry about what the transmission is doing, it is definately a programming thing though, as i have since turned the chip back to stock and duplicated the pass and does not shift the same way. I guess i will have to get ahold of edge. Also i was in level 2, never have ran 3.
