My personal experience: Edge vs Troyer Tune

Having finally got my custom tune from Troyer, and having lots of fun with it so far - I thought I would share my opinion with you fine folks about the noticeable differences that I have perceived between the Edge programmer and a custom Troyer tune with the Xcal II. BTW, I ran with the Edge for 2+ years on level 3 with 91 octane; and now I am running a custom Troyer 91 octane performance tune on my 5.4L with 3.73's.

First of all, don't expect to gain a tremendous amount of power going from a canned tune to a custom tune. It isn't like adding a supercharger. The Edge, for the price, gave plenty of power and was quite comparable to the Troyer tune - especially in WOT.

That being said, there is a noticeable power difference in 1/4 throttle, 1/2 throttle etc. with the custom tune over the Edge. The Troyer tune seems to not only have better throttle response, but also noticeably better power at different throttle positions - which is great for city driving.

The biggest difference, and I mean by far, is the way the transmission reacts with the custom tune. The Troyer tune is a night and day difference over the Edge in this aspect. The truck shifts smoother then I could ever get it to with the Edge, and the tranny shifts right when you want it to. It is still a firm shift, but smooth in the sense of shifting right when it should. That alone makes the extra $$$ for the custom tune over a canned tune worth it (oh, and the truck is not running lean any more). I really cannot believe how smooth the truck is now. It seems that the engine and tranny are finally in perfect harmony.

Overall, I think the Edge is a good product for the price - but if you can fork up some extra cash and are will to patiently wait, a custom tune will make your F150 ride like it should have from the factory. Just though I'd share my experience for y'all.

except smooth shifts aren't what I am after. The transmision lives longer with firmer shifts because there is less slipage. I bought my edge for the sole reason to shift firmer.

You can request the shifts be extra firm, which they say should be for racing applications haha.

I'm turing my worksheets in tomarrow and gonna wait for the dreaded 6 week wait. There is no rush however. Just how many of you have the 93 performance tune? And how much better pick up does it have over the 87 performance tune?

Transmission shifting is firm, but smooth in the sense of overall shifting when you want it to. With the Edge (at least in my truck), the torque converter didn't seem to react properly. Trust me, when you go WOT with the custom tune, you can feel it shift firmly.

..and like Damestic said, you can request different levels of firmness with a custom tune.

I'll throw in my 2 cents. I agree with everything.

Going from the Edge to VMP's tune was night and day difference in driveability. The Edge at WOT feels like the truck is going to blow apart compared to a custom tune.

how much do the Troyer tunes cost? I sold my edge about 6 months ago due to the Edge drone that drove me crazy no more Edge for me although I did like it on the performance part.

Could someone 'splain the "worksheets" to me in a nut shell.

Also, waiting for the custom tune for ~6 weeks... does that mean you run with the stock PCM and once the Troyer tuned one shows up you send them your stocker, or what.

Thanks for the info.
