not sure - off the shelf or custom programmer - edge / superchip / ???

First, I have heard a lot of good things about the Edge tuner until I did some research on f150online. I was all set to buy one actually. But it seems as though everyone raves about Troyer Performance so now, I've been researching Troyer Performance. I've been trying to read as many posts about the performance gains as possible, but it seems as though everyone has a custom program made for them. Does anyone use the stock programms they offer? I'm not looking to turn my truck into a dragster, extreme 4x4, or get a million miles per gallon but I would like it to perform a little better.
I have an '04 F-150 SuperCrew 4x4 Lariat with the 5.4L. The previous owner put a little bit of a bigger tire (works out to a 32.6" tire) on it as well as a small lift. I think the speedometer is off a little which I guess would also mean my MPG is off also. My throttle response is lacking as well as the shift points seeming to be off. I can't drive down the road at 45mph because the tranny can't decide if it wants to be in 3rd or OD. (I've had the tranny looked at and was told theres nothing wrong with it and that it's probably bc of the tires.)
I won't be towing too often, but when I do, it'll be around 5500#'s, maybe a little more. I'd like my speedometer / MPG and tranny shift points recalibrated for my current tire size and for towing. I'm still wondering what the best route to go would be. It'd be nice to gain some HP and torque but thats not my main goal. I'm not looking to add an intake, exhaust, TBS, or anything of that matter if I don't really have to.
I also don't really know much about the whole flashing the computer and what not that takes place for tuning or really much about what generation code/computer is in my truck. Where do I find what computer and code is in it now?

What would you all suggest?

Thanks in advance.

Before we get into which tuner you should go with. I don't believe you should have a problem with your transmission like that. The factory 4x4 tires are 32" tall so being 1/2" taller shouldn't effect your shift points that drastic as well as your speedometer. The speedometer is probally closer to the actual speed than it was before. I have 37s and with the stock programming, I don't have any problems until highway speeds where it will go between 3rd and 4th. I've had experience with a lot of tuners and my two favorites are the Edge and the Xcal2 via VMPTuning's tune. I'm running VMP's tune currently and couldn't say good enough things about their tune!

I can't speak for Superchips or Xcal2 because I've never tried either one of them. I do have the EDGE on my 03 and love it. I chose the EDGE over the XCal2 for these reasons:

1. I bought mine used and saved a ton of money(about $250). You can't really buy a used Xcal2 because they are custom tuned for that vehicle (you can buy a used one, but then you have to get get it re-tuned which is more money and will probably work out to be the same as a new one after everything is said and done).

2. If I ever sell my truck, I can resell the EDGE seperately and get most if not all the money back I originally bought it for.

3. I didn't want to wait 6 weeks.

I have heard of some issues with the EDGE on the newer F150s (04-07) but I think there are a lot more people who are very happy with it than are unhappy with it.

If I had the money and I was convinced that I would keep my truck forever, I would've gone with an Xcal2. However, I am completely satisfied with the EDGE and would recommend it to anyone, especially if they are looking to save money on a used one. However, if you plan on buying a new EDGE, I would say to get the Xcal2.

Well, I brought the truck to a trusted tranny mechanic so that still doesn't explain the shifting. But I'd like it to shift more solid and see if I can gain a little performance out of it for when I am towing.

jk0007;
I have read about it leaning out your A/F ratio... Have you had any problems with this? Is there anything at all that you're not happy with? (even down to size of the display or color, anything.)

I agree but #3 isn't all tuners. Just Troyer Performance it seems. Yes there is a little bit of wait time to get mailed a tuner loaded with 3 tunes.

Check out www.VMPTuning.com and give Justin a call, he'll be able to answer all of your questions.

Sorry for the hi-jack
Thump,
In your opinion what was the difference between the 2 in terms of performance. I would mainly use mine to aid in towing. So the increased power is about as important as the engine vitals/trans temp guages the edge provide are. Id hate to spend all that money on custom tunes then have to buy that hawk to monitor the trans temps, engine load and things like that. I guess though if the custom tunes are 2x better than it would be worth it, but for a 10 or even 20% difference my money could be better spent

Depending on how much weight you tow, I don't think you'll need to worry about your transmission temperatures too much. I'm lucky though, I've still got the Edge hooked up to monitor temperatures but with the VMP Tunes via the Xcal2. A custom tuned Xcal2 is a step up from the Edge without a doubt. The numbers only show a few in difference of peak hp and peak ft/tq but it feels like a whole new truck. I don't think you'll be too disappointed in either one.

Sadly no custom tunes on an Edge, that would solve my problem

You can't put "custom" tunes on the Edge but you can modify them to some degree which most do.

PS: The girl is Raven Riley.

I dont tow often but when I do it can get up near 7500 lbs. I just get a lil nervous because i have no idea what the trans temp is at

If you're towing that much than I'd get the Edge and leave it on level2. I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the performance increase as well.

i haven't seen her work, I'll have to look her up though....

So if I"m not really looking for performance, just more for towing, around 6000 lbs, then you'd say an edge? Think I'll gain any HP or Torque from just going with an Edge?
