Question About Troyer Tune & Af1
Question About Troyer Tune & Af1
HEY GUYS,
I have the 3" AF1 and custom troyer tunes that should be arriving anyday now. I had to towing a loaded car trailer this weekend and my wife was about to choke me with the drone coming from the AF1. So for now on when I go on a long distance trip (towing something) with my wife I am going to have to take off the AF1. This sucks, I no.
But my question is do you guys think I should have troyer redo my custom tow tune to operate without the AF1. It's not going to be very often that i have to do this, but when i do the truck is going to be working hard for a long distance.

OR, which other units out there give a similar HP but quieter operation. Maybe the Volant or similar?
I had a problem like that but it seemed to like to drone more when I was near 2,000 rpm like I was really hit the go pedal but I was not. In time, with strategic learning I think my truck does not do that anymore. There was also some talk of adjusting how deep the filter was installed on the tube. Hope this helps !

Maybe try adjusting the depth the tube goes in to your filter ?!?! or I am not sure which would be more costly....a new truck or new wife !! Just joking...good luck with both !! I know my air filter droning went away in time !
A couple of points, guys..........
First - the Air Force One does not make any noise *except* when you have the engine under a heavy load - period.
And even then all you hear is mild, the sound of air coming thru that low-restriction intake when the engine is breathing hard, and it's not in any way annoying IMHO - and I like a quiet vehicle except when I'm running hard. I feel that anyone that thinks it is "noisy" either has not installed it right, or really shouldn't be doing any modifications whatsoever to any area of the intake or exhaust.
Simply put, the AF1 is the quietest intake on the market that actually adds real power. You will hear a *little* bit of noise when towing a heavy load going up a grade (because the engine is of course under a heavy load, and thus needs to breathe a lot more air), or when you have your foot to the floor - in other words, when it *should* be making a bit of sound, and it's not loud by any means, it's simply the sound of a healthy V8 making power - so anyone who wants their truck dead quiet needs to need be driving a truck, basically - or maybe needs to pony up for a Bentley or a Rolls Royce. (I'm kidding here a bit, obviously!
)
Second - for the 2004 & newer 5.4 3V trucks, there is always the 3.0" version of the Air Force One, and that does NOT require any tuning changes to use - it is the only intake kit known to actually increase power everywhere and not require tuning of the 26 kits we have tested (which is to say every one on the market).
The Volant intake kit, while it has a nice appearance to be sure, that is about all it has going for it, unfortunately. We have tested it numerous times, as people who have been to our public dyno days will tell you - and the results are always the same. It only gains a small amount of power and even then that is only at low rpms, there is nothing more at the peak - in fact, it's less than the stock intake at the peak, like many intake kits for the 5.4 3V engine, unfortunately. And last, the Volant does in fact lean the engine out significantly and thus it too, requires custom tuning to compensate for it leaning out the motor - and even then there is no gain in peak HP when the tune only fixes the A/F ratios, only a small gain at low rpms. Every time we have a dyno day and people come here with a Volant, they see what it does and the corrections it requires versus what the AF1 does, and most of them remove it on the spot and have us install the AF1 and gain more power, and are much happier with it. I don't mean to pick on Volant, we like the company itself - all we care about is what actually works, and what the facts are.
Heck, if some company named Timbuck-eleventeen (don't ask me where I got that from, I just made up something silly
) made the best intake kit, then that is what we would advise using - but for those who want the best, it's the Air Force one, hands down, as we have proved so many times. Just ask a guy here whose screen name is "Ski" - he was recently here with another intake kit, and we beat his existing 93 octane tuning and intake kit with our 93 octane tuning and the AF1 by a whopping 30 RWHP.
Anyway, for the gentleman who posted this thread, STEVEN30 - with the 3.0" AF1, you do not require any custom tuning to compensate for the 3.0" version - that is only required for the older 3.25" and the current larger 3.5" versions of the Air Force One. We have discontinued the 3.25" unit, and now offer the 3.0" unit for those who want to be able to run it with their stock tuning, and then the 3.5" version for those who want the largest power gains across the board.
I hope that info helps!
