A Q for M Troyer

I have an Xcal 1 that was done by a now gone shop.It has 3 tunes 1 for 87gas 1 for 89 and 1 for 93gas.All 3 tunes cause the truck to "ping" under any type of load be it a hill or flat ground and the AC kicks on.I dont want to have to spend the cash on a second tuner as the xcal1 is fine for me.I have the cable to connect it to a pc and the extreme tune software. The cable and software were the solution the shop gave me for the ping. They told me to play with the tunes.I am in no way skilled in tunes so I did not and do not want to try and fix a bad tune. Can I get tunes with out purchasing a new tuner? The ping is bad and it makes me crazy but with stock tune its fine.

That is absolutely horrible that their solution to your pingin was to give you the Xtreme Tune software and a cable... Just hideous!!!

Anyhow, you don't need to purchase a new tuner. What you DO need to purchase are new tunes. Any SCT-authorized person can do that. But you really should go with someone who has a good reputation, as well as alot of experience with the F150 trucks. Check out Troyer Performance, Bamachips, or VMP Tuning. I have tunes from all 3 of them, and they're all good, but different depending on what you want out of a tune.

Based on the tunes I've received - Troyer has the best all-out performance, but around-town driveability is sacraficed. It shifts at less-than-desirable times/speeds... Bamachips is the mildest tune. But Doug (the owner) likes to make the shifts too hard. VMP is in my opinin the all-around best. Good power boost, and even more important to me is the fact that it drives very nicely. Shifts at just the right time/speed. Not hard, not sloppy, but just right. Again, JMO. 99% of the people here will come and say that Mike Troyer is the Alpha and the Omega of F150 tuning...

Hi bronkx1,

Well, if your truck is a 2007 as you have listed, then you actually need to be in the XCal 2 instead of the original XCal1 due to the new & different PCM's that are in the 2007 F-150's. I would *never* attempt to flash a 2007 F-150 with an XCal 1, that's a good way to potentially disable the vehicle. We can discus that if you;d liek to give us a call so that I have a proper understanding of what you are actually doing.

At any rate, yes, we can normally jsut supply repalcement tunes, usually most people do not need to buy a new tuner - unless theone they have either will nto work at all, or simply shouldn't be used on theoir current vehicle - so yes, that cna usually be done!

One point - these 2004 & newer trucks have a massive 12 DEGREES of retard capability right from the factory. So the *only* ways that truck is going to ping is if either there is something wrong with the truck, or if you have some extremely bad fuel, or if there is something wrong in the tune that is usually not simply in the amount of spark commanded. For example, most tuners simply load SCT value files and then maybe make a few simple other changes at best, and call it a tune - and that's a a very bad idea for these trucks for reasos I won't go into here.

Now if it does NOT ping on the stock factory tune, then I can pretty much know right away what is wrong in the existing tunes, and we will be able to provide much better power, performance, overall driveability *including* around town, etc - nobody else has the quality of tuning in these F-150's that we do.

In short - please feel free to give us a call and we'll be more than happy to go over this with you, OK? Tel my staff I said for you to cal me personally, and give them your screen name and tell them about this post, and I'll take the call personally - they have to screen my calls heavily due to so many people wanting to talk with me personally, and I can't talk to everyone, as much as I'd like to!! But I would like to speak with you personally on this situation, so please do give us a call, OK?

Thanks, & good luck!

Hi bronkx1,

Nobody here has gotten any call from anyone telling us your screen name to the best of my knowledge, so if you have actually called here since I made that last post, my apologies, Our staff is generally very good about this sort of thing. At any rate, all you need to do is as I said before, give us a call and let my staff know who you are and that I asked you to call me personally and they WILL let you thru.

As I told you before, the 2007 trucks have a different PCM than the 2004-2006 trucks have, and *that* is why the XCal 1 cannot be used on the 2007's - because the 2007's have a different PCM.

So your truck will require the 9400 (XCal 2, which has far more features and once you pay for a used XCal 1 and then pay for tunes doesn't cost much more anyway) just like every other 2007, and also requires a different firmware revision in the 9400, which we'll automatically load for your here, no problem. And no, you don't have to wait 2 months, we are thru much of our backlog, and right now it's about 30 *working* days roughly from the time you get us the completed paperwork until we have shipped out your tunes, and in some cases, a bit quicker. We're trying to get them done as quickly as possible, while still getting all of the project vehicles we have to get done done, and do the R&D that we keep doing on an ongoing basis, etc.

I hope that helps your understanding a bit, & please do feel free to call me - I understand your frustration, and we'll try our best to work with you on this, OK?

Thanks for your post, & I hope to hear from you!

I did call and I did not get thru.I have the Xcal 1 and it was returned to stock before I sold the last truck.Other shops are still selling the Xcal 1 for use on the 07 trucks so what is special about the other shops? If the Xcal1 will not work on my 07 then I dont know that I want to spend more cash for an SCT product.I have an SCT tuner now that works just fine and gives me the features I need but may do me no good.I guess I will call SCT and see what they say about the Xcal1 and the 07 F150.

Edit::::
Talked to SCT...The Xcal 1 will not work on 07 mustang or f150.So I guess the Xcal1 is going on ebay.
