edge with mods: troyer $$$
edge with mods: troyer $$$
ok to help me make my final choice. would an edge not work well with a 2000 5.4 with k&n drop in, mags cat back and the mags high-flow cats? Too lean or rich?? I dont have the high-flows yet but want to put them mainly for sound and i want to get a tuner. Also exactly how much does it run to get the Xcal2 and troyer tunes?? ive always just read its relative to the edge. but i have never heard of a price. I know the xcal2 is $450 and it says the tuning is included, but it then says theres a discount on the tuning for f150online members. Mike or any one????
I would go with Troyer. They custom make your tunes so that all of your mods work together to their fullest potential. Yes, you do get a discount for being a member on this site. However, they dont disclose their prices online. Price is cheaper than the Edge. Give them a call. They will answer all your questions.
thats what i am thinking as of now. the xcal2 comes with "canned" tunes that i can use until i get my custom ones, correct? why can't they just make things easy and put the prices on there. what is this the CIA??

Hi cookdawg,
There is nothing else that works as well as our Troyer Performance custom tuning for these trucks - not because we are God's gift to tuning, it really gets down to a combination of my almost 30 years of tuning experience, and most importantly the fact that we specialize in this specific vehicle platform and have for over 15 years - far longer than anyone else (well, other than maybe Ford themselves).
There really is no way you can accurately predict up front if your truck is going to be lean, rich or OK either stock or with those mods you list - simply because they vary, some are lean right from the factory - though this tends to happen more in the 2004 & 2005 trucks. With most of the rest, it's a matter of keeping the MAF sensor's wires clean and replacing the upstream O2 sensors every 30K-50K miles, something almost nobody really does properly - and then the exact types of modifications you do. Anyway, NO off the shelf tuner can properly compensate for that, as none of them can properly write each of the 30 different points of the MAF sensor's transfer function differently as is required to properly dial in A/F ratios on a vehicle that is delivering a significantly different A/F ratio from what is being commanded. All any off the shelf tuner can do is simply throw a set percentage (2%, 4%. etc) additional fuel at the *entire* MAF curve, at all rpms, at any & all throttle positions - and that is not how to do things properly when adjusting Air/Fuel ratios.
Now you can usually do things like exhaust mods like you are talking about and be OK as long as they are done properly - but when you change the air intake track you will lean the engine out in most cases, and to varying degrees - sometimes only a little bit, sometimes by a bit more - it really depends on which intake kit, and what model year & which engine your F-150 is - that is something we can advise you about over the phone by the way, so you'll have a better feel for that.
In general, off the shelf devices are *not* for any kind of "custom" tuning, despite the claims - even with the tuning device that we use to load our custom tuning into, although it too allows you to adjust to add fuel, or to pull out spark, dialing in Air Fuel ratios *properly* is something that really needs to be done via proper custom tuning.
We sell both the off the shelf devices as well as our custom tuning, so we can provide you with either one - but what will get you the best result is our custom tuning, by far, because when *we* do the tuning it goes much further in depth, as well as all of the experience and R&D in F-150 tuning we have. F-150 tuning is not easy with the hundreds of different PCM strategies these trucks have each and every model year - something that NO other vehicle in the world has, by the way.
Now, *could* you potentially be happy with an off the shelf device? Sure, that is possible!
Will you get the kind of results that we can provide you with via our custom tuning? No.
How do you decide which you really need and/or want? By calling us, because we sell both we're happy to go over this in proper detail with you to give you proper advice on which way we feel will best serve you, the pros & cons, and so you can make a properly informed decision.
Trying to compare "off the shelf" tuning devices with what we do here in our F-150 custom tuning is literally comparing apples & oranges, really - off the shelf stuff serves some people, and if you want to go that route, we can help you with that - but if you want the *best* results, and want the ability to have your tuning adjusted to compensate for modifications, then you'll need to go with our custom tuning, and you'll be very happy that you did. If you ever spend the time to read posts from those who have used off the shelf devices and then used *our* tuning, you'll find that virtually every one of them raves about the difference. I have to admit that it's hard to answer some of these posts without sounding like some hard-core sales dude, but I'm simply trying to convey reality to you - and you choose from there.
If you'd like to give us a call to go over this and discuss your vehicle, what is done to it so far, anything else you plan to do in the future, or even things you're thinking about doing, we'll be more than happy to answer questions & help you, and let you know if we feel you will be happy using an off the shelf device, or if you will be better served by going with our in-depth custom tuning.
Last - it is against the rules for us to discuss pricing here - so for that, we'll need to handle that by phone so that you will know what your pricing is on our tuning products as a registered member of this web site - those are the vendor rules here, and why that is not discussed.
I hope this info helps you out a bit, & we hope to hear from you. Thanks for your post, & best of luck whatever you decide!
