Which tune should I run and why?

I have a dilemma. Which tune should I run?

I have a Troyer tuned Xcal2 with 87 Perf, 93 Perf and 93 Tow tunes. I ran the 87 tune for a while and was very happy with it. I changed tunes to the 93 Perf tune and have been more impressed. I have not yet loaded the 93 Tow tune but am curious if it will suit my driving style better than the 93 Perf tune.

Since I rarely run at WOT, will I find the part throttle improvements with the Tow tune? Any advice based on experience will be appreciated. Thanks.

I asked this question a ways back, and MT said the perf tunes will give you the best possible torque improvements at ALL throttle positions. Tow tunes focus on EGT reduction and some tranny shifting differences, as is appropriate for towing.

So - if not towing, keep it on your highest octane perf tune - you'll get better efficiency due to BSFC improvements.

Not to be compared to, or confused with, the Edge L2 /L3 differences.

Cheers

yoheidiho - Good question

MGDfan - excellent answer

I have intended to ask MT that exact question. I frequently tow and for a while ran the tow tune always but when taking truck in for 30k transmission service I went back to stock and then to performance tune. I really like the performance tune better but never really asked the quesion of what is the difference in the tunes. Since I have gotten over my fear of "retuning" I now change my tunes when needed.

Hi yoheidiho,

MGDFan's answer was right on the money - the highest performance tune is going to give you the most responsiveness at any throttle position.

A towing tune is designed for use when towing - so the engine is tuned somewhat differently as is appropriate for running heavy loads out back - it runs a bit richer to keep things cooler and thus will not make quite as much peak Hp or torque - though it is still of course more than our 87 octane tuning.

Use the tunes as is described in our documentation - and a towing tune is made to be used when towing.

There is no advantage to using a towing tune when not towing - the only exception to that would be if someone has to tow frequently, then it does not make sense to continually reflash the PCM several times a week. So in a case like *that* you would be better off to just leave it on the towing tune all the time - but that is really the only exception.

Otherwise, run your performance tunes when not towing, and run your towing tune when towing.

Have fun,

Can't u use the performance tune while towing up to factory specs? I keep my performance tune in when hauling stuff, except when I haul way to much then I put the towing tune in. Is this advisable or should I switch to the towing tune when hauling anything.

ski-you can haul the fctory recommended payload on performance tune- not while towing- towing 5 k lbs is much different than hauling 2500 lbs-phil

Cool thanks for the info. I've never towed anything, and don't see me towing in my near future, but I do haul alot of stuff, gravel, plywood, 2x4's, landscaping blocks. I think the most I did was about 2500-2800lbs.
