Question New to Tuners

Hi All,

Been perusing the forums over the last few days and learned quite a bit. Had a few questions which I couldn't seem to find the answer to in here for someone who hasn't used these things before.

I have a brand new 2007 F150 FX4 with the 5.4L and 3.73 gears with around 1,200 miles. I'm in the market for a travel trailer and have been on the fence about some recommended upgrades from a local 4WD dealer to help with towing the 7800LB loaded trailer that I will likely have shortly.

Of the recommended upgrades was the Flashpaq tuner. I've seen mention that the Flashpaq as well as some others have "canned tunes", which I think will be fine for me, but I've also seen mentioned that some of these canned tunes require 91 octane to run? From those that have the Flashpaq or Edge what are the canned tunes and do they all require high octane fuel to run? Or am I able to get a benefit out of standard 87 octane for towing?

I know Edge has problems with 07's at the moment, but to what degree I'm not entirely sure if someone could elaborate on that as well.

Sorry for the long start

Thanks!

I would 'very highly' recommend staying away from an EDGE with your '07 for now. Let them work the bugs out first. Some 07 people are having luck with it... many others are not.

Also, I'd wait until after you get the trailer and see if you find that you actually need it. I do highly recommend Tekonsha's new P3 trailer brake control.

I have a 07 supercrew with the 5.4. I just talked to edge and gave them my pcm# and they said that mine is supported. They said about 95% of the 07's are supported.

I can't speak for the 07s but I have an 04 5.4 with an Edge. I've had it for about 3 months now, and I have no complaints on it at all. The Edge has 3 levels of preset programs. Level 1 is for transmission changes only. Level 2 is for Towing, and changes the timing a little bit. Both Level 1 & 2 can be operated with 87 octane, but you can also use a higher octane if you want. Level 3 is for Performance and requires 92+ octane. I have yet to tow a load to see the pull difference, but in all I'm happy with the Edge itself. I have noticed MPG increase and definately a Power increase. Hope this helps guys.

This is not intended as a flame.
Your statement (which comes with the Edge) that you can run Level 1 and 2 on 87 octane, but can run a higher octane with it makes me wonder.
Its evident that the tuner can not detect what grade of fuel (87-89-91-93 and etc) you are running so how can it compensate the timing for it? It can't......Whats the use in wasting $$$$ to buy a higher ocatane fuel if the tune can not maximize its use. Do they intend the knock sensors to legitimize a multi octane tune??? This is exactly why when someone claims that the Edge can be used to "custom" tune I have to laugh softly and be thankful for the Xcal2...

You can adjust for the higher octane and altitude on the Edge on level 1 or 2 or 3.

Read below:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...95#post2017095

Link to Edge manual: http://www.edgeproducts.com/product.php?pk=54&pvk=161

From the manual:

Timing Adjustment
This timing option helps determine the final ignition timing based on intended fuel octane rating. Modifying your timing may help improve fuel economy as well as overall performance. However, choosing timing advance that is too high might cause detonation (pinging), which may cause serious harm to your engine. Lowering this value will not harm the engine but may reduce performance and economy.
(Hint a good general rule is to increase timing .5 counts for every octane count you go up, i.e. if you are running 93 octane fuel in level three you could safely increase the timing 1.5 counts).

I understand your comment completely, but if you are an Edge owner, you will know that when programming your truck that each level requires a certain minimum octane. That being said, there is nothing saying that you can't run a higher octain that required for minimum. Just saying.

If you put in a higher octane then recommended then you have to adjust the timing on the Edge.

HI caramon,

Well, we carry the Edge as well as other off the shelf tuning products just as we always have - but far more people come to us for our Troyer Performance custom tuning, as they want the best Edge's support for 2007's is far from complete, though they are working on it.

The issue, frankly, is far more important than what brand - it doesn't matter what brand of hardware you use to deliver the tune to your vehicle's PCM, it's the actual *tuning* that matters, that is what determines the results. So it's who is actually doing the tuning and what their experience level is specifically on F-150's that determines your results - and the truth is, *nobody* else has our experience in this platform. We have specialized in performance tuning & modifying thee F-150's for far longer than anyone else in the market - by far - over 15 years now. To the point that we get called in to help other chipmakers, OEM's, manufacturers, etc due to our expertise on this platform.

In these 2007's that is especially important as virtually no off the shelf tuner is actually gaining real power on 87 octane due to changes Ford implemented in their 2007 F-150 strategies - however, we do not have that problem, and still get nice power gains on any level of octane of fuel with our Troyer Performance custom tuning.

Additionally, when you go with our Troyer Performance custom tuning, you get a set of 3 different tunes that are made from scratch for your specific vehicle and your needs, how you operate the vehicle, etc., and we also include free any adjustments that may be required for other modifications - we also provide complete instructions, step-by-step, on how to datalog the vehicle, which the tuning device we provide you with will do, in order for us to tweak those tunes further if the vehicle owner desires. So you get true custom tuning, not canned off the shelf tunes that are compromised to only match the first 5 digits of the vehicle's strategy, which is the standard in off-the-shelf types of tuners, and are all a far less thorough tune than what we provide.

The reality is that most people here come to us for our custom tuning, as they know our reputation for excellence, customer service, and for providing the best tuning available for these F-150's - we actually test many of the various performance products on the market for these vehicles so that we can properly advise our customers as to which parts actually do the best job.

Of course we carry the off the shelf tuning products as well - but for every one off the shelf unit we sell, we sell 100 or more of our custom tuned applications, because people generally want the best they can get when they spend their hard-earned money, and no other tuning is going to help you tow that heavy load better than our tuning will.

We realize there is a lot of info out there - a lot of people promoting their own pet's, people representing other manufacturers & vendors flying in here under the radar (meaning trying to hide the fact that they have an affiliation & thus a vested interest) loudly singing the praises of particular products, others who push the Edge unit by attempting to tell people we really aren't custom tuning, etc., and frankly, you really have to watch the motivations of some of those people - it takes some time to even sort them out and see who's really who when you are new here as well - and frankly, you shouldn't have to worry about any of that.

What I suggest is to spend some time here reading posts from people who have our Troyer Performance custom tuning and see what they have to say about it - you will also find a significant number of people who used to use the Edge and switched to our tuning and are amazed at the difference.

The bottom line is, we carry the off the shelf products as well, and most importantly, we have specialized in F-150 performance longer than anyone else - so we *know* what does the best job, and how to best help that vehicle's performance, towing ability, overall driveability, etc.

I hope this brief info helps, & please feel free to give us a call to go over any of this in more detail, so you'll have a good idea of just what is going to do the best job for you and what you want.

Thanks for your post, & best of luck with your truck!

I thought I saw a post here a few weeks ago about how to find your PCM# with pics. Can anyone tell me where to find it on my 07? It's a 4 digit alphanumeric code correct?

HI Caramon,

If you are having any problem locating your code, you can always give us a call.

Briefly, the are two main places to look - first, open your passenger-side front door, and look in the general area of the door hinges in the front part of the door frame, and there sometimes you will find that 4-digit code, 3 letters followed by 1 number (like say, KHX4, would be just one of many codes for a 2007 5.4 3V, just for example).

Also, you can always find your code under the hood on the PCM itself, which is located at the top of the firewall, just left of center - it will have 3 wiring harness connections going to the front of it, so it's easy to spot, it's a aluminum "box", for lack of a better term. There on the PCM itself,m or just to the side of it on a sticker, will be some information, part of which is that code.

If it's confusing to you when you look at that sticker on the PCM or beside, it, you can just write everything down just as it appears & email or call us with that info, and we can tell you the code from that, no problem. The PCM itself is referred to as "P221" on that sticker, but that is NOT the computer code - P221 is simply Ford's internal code name for the 2004 & newer F-150 series vehicles, they are called "P221's". The code you are looking for will be 3 letters followed by 1 number, and its' always there on the 2004 & newer trucks.

Again, please feel free to call us if you have any problems on this, OK?

Good luck!
